The Moondrop Venus is an over-ear planar magnetic headphone with an open back and dense V-shaped grilles, and it is the first full-size planar model from the brand. Its announced price was USD 599.99, later reduced to USD 549. Moondrop states that the frequency response follows HRTF and that distortion stays very low at high volume. The Venus was announced in summer 2022 and released later that year after delays.
Key specs that matter
The planar diaphragm measures 100 mm and is 2 microns thick. It is driven by 36 N52 magnets, and the conductor is a pure silver etched circuit. Rated frequency response is 6 Hz to 80 kHz, with an effective range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz measured to IEC60318-4 within plus or minus 3 dB. Impedance is 18 ohm plus or minus 15 percent at 1 kHz and sensitivity is 100 dB per Vrms at 1 kHz. Nonlinear distortion is stated at less than 0.05 percent. The headphone weighs about 615 g.
Engineering and use context
The driver and housing are built as one patented integrated structure machined by CNC from aviation-grade aluminium alloy. According to Moondrop, this light but stiff frame holds the 36 large magnets without putting undue stress on the assembly. The magnet array was optimised by finite element analysis. A combined high-frequency waveguide phase equalisation technology uses rounded caps on the ends of the magnets as waveguides. The headband is a self-adjusting leather design built as a suspension strap with thin padding, and the clamping force is firm. Cables are interchangeable and plug into a 3.5 mm socket on each earcup. The frame is all metal with exposed screws for disassembly, the yokes swivel on a visible pivot, and a fairly dense foam sheet sits between each driver and its cup. The ear pads are covered in leather. Supplied with the headphone are a 3.5 mm single-ended cable, a 4.4 mm balanced cable with 6N Litz conductors, a 3.5 mm to 6.35 mm adapter, a postcard, a manual and a QC certificate.
Pairing
The balanced lead is a four-core silver braided design for headphone amplifiers and players with a balanced socket. Single-ended sources connect through the stock cable in black braided cloth, and the adapter covers full-size sockets on desktop amplifiers.
Alternatives
The Moondrop Para is another full-size planar magnetic headphone in the Moondrop range.
