Moondrop of China designed the SKYLAND as a full-size open-back planar magnetic headphone worn over the ear. It uses a 100 mm driver with a diaphragm of roughly 500 nanometres and a drive circuit that spreads across nearly the whole vibrating area, and it comes with a balanced cable plus adapters for single-ended and XLR outputs.

Key specs that matter

Moondrop rates the SKYLAND at 60 ohms plus or minus 15 percent impedance and 96 dB per Vrms sensitivity. Total harmonic distortion is 0.05 percent or lower at 1 kHz and 94 dB. The frequency response is 8 Hz to 34,000 Hz measured to IEC61094 in free field, and the effective response is 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz within 3 dB to IEC60318-4. The cable plugs into dual 3.5 mm sockets on the earcups and ends in a 4.4 mm balanced plug.

Engineering and use context

The diaphragm is kept very thin to lower moving mass and inertia. A multi-layer pure silver etched circuit covers most of it, which Moondrop calls Full Drive, applying force more evenly across the surface and reducing split vibration, while a tension-balancing process limits stress concentration in the film. The magnetic field comes from an array of 36 N55 neodymium strip magnets whose spacing and strength were set with finite element analysis to keep the field consistent over the diaphragm. The driver sits in a cavity housing CNC-machined from aluminium alloy, while the open back is covered by a woven metal grille. A carbon fibre suspension strap spreads the load on the head, and the headband uses a hollow, flexible 3D-printed structure with a larger surface area for airflow. The box contains spare earpads, the balanced cable, a 4.4 mm to 6.35 mm adapter and a 4.4 mm to XLR cable, along with a manual, a service card, an anime card and a certificate. Aftermarket leads with a matching dual-entry layout fit too. The replacement earpads in the box let owners renew the contact surfaces without ordering parts.

Pairing

Being a planar design of modest efficiency, the SKYLAND needs more voltage than a typical in-ear monitor, so a desk-bound headphone amp or a portable DAC amplifier with ample voltage output is the expected source. The stock balanced lead connects directly to balanced portable and desktop outputs, the supplied adapter covers single-ended amplifiers, and the XLR cable suits amplifiers with four-pin balanced sockets.

Alternatives

Another open-back planar magnetic model from Moondrop, the VENUS, uses 18 N52 magnets on one side.
