The Soundgear Sense is a pair of true wireless open-ear headphones from JBL, introduced in 2023. It uses JBL OpenSound Technology with air conduction, so the earbuds rest on the curve of the ear without closing off the ear canal, leaving the wearer able to hear the surroundings.

Key specs that matter

Every earbud uses a single 16.2 mm dynamic driver, and the stated frequency response is 20 Hz to 20 kHz, an impedance of 32 ohm, a sensitivity of 112 dB SPL at 1 kHz and a maximum SPL of 90 dB. Music playback reaches 6 hours per charge plus another 18 hours supplied by the case, 24 hours overall, and talk time is up to 3.5 hours. The earbuds weigh 12.85 g each, 25.7 g for the pair, the charging case 68.1 g and the neckband 5.3 g. Bluetooth 5.3 is used with the HFP 1.8, A2DP 1.4 and AVRCP 1.6.2 profiles.

Engineering and use context

OpenSound directs sound pressure towards the ear while an opposite phase signal reduces dispersion, which JBL says keeps leakage almost at zero and protects privacy. The drivers work with a bass processing algorithm developed for the open design. Flexible earhooks rotate, so the user can choose between focusing on playback and letting in more outside sound. A detachable neckband is supplied for a more secure fit during workouts. The earbuds carry an IP54 rating for dust and splashes. Batteries are 70 mAh lithium-ion cells at 3.85 V in the earbuds and a 600 mAh cell at 3.8 V inside the case. Charging from empty takes 2 hours, while a 15-minute charge over the USB-C cable adds 4 hours of music. Power input is 5 V at 1 A. Four microphones handle calls, with a sensitivity of -38 dBV/Pa at 1 kHz. Touch controls on each earbud run music, volume and calls and can be reassigned in the My JBL Headphones app, which also offers a find-my-earbuds function and Smart Audio and Video modes, and the app is a free download. JBL gives 45 degrees C as the highest operating temperature.

Pairing

Opening the case pairs the earbuds with a phone, tablet or computer automatically through fast pair, and Dual Connect lets either earbud be used alone or both together, so no amplifier or DAC is required. The box holds the earbuds, the neckband, a USB-C charging cable, the charging case, a warranty card and the quick start guide.
