The Tune Beam is a true wireless earphone from JBL's Tune range, part of a Harman spec sheet family dated 2022, and it pairs active noise cancelling with a stem-style housing that JBL calls the stick-closed Beam design. It is the stem counterpart to the rounder Tune Buds, and JBL also produced a translucent Ghost version of it later.
Key specs that matter
Each earpiece carries a 6.0 mm dynamic driver. JBL lists a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, a 16 ohm impedance, 97 dB SPL sensitivity at 1 kHz and a maximum output of 94 dB SPL. One earpiece weighs 5.0 g, so the pair comes to 10 g, and the charging case adds 50.3 g. Music playback lasts up to 12 hours per charge with noise cancelling off and 10 hours with it engaged, while the case stores a further 36 or 30 hours respectively, which is how the 48 hour headline figure is built. Talk time is up to 6.6 hours without ANC and 6 hours with it. The earpieces use 70 mAh lithium-ion polymer cells at 3.85 V, the case a 750 mAh cell at 3.7 V, and a full recharge from empty takes 2 hours. A 15 minute Speed Charge adds 4 hours of play. The housings are rated IP54 against water and dust.
Engineering and use context
The oval tube of the stem is shaped to follow the ear and to seal the canal, so part of the outside noise is blocked passively before the ANC circuit works on the rest. Four microphones handle calls, with a stated microphone sensitivity of -38 dBV/Pa. Smart Ambient offers two modes - Ambient Aware passes surrounding sound in for street use, and TalkThru lowers playback for a short conversation. VoiceAware sets how much of the wearer's own voice is fed back during a call. The Bluetooth 5.3 radio operates in the 2.4 to 2.4835 GHz band at under 9 dBm with GFSK, pi/4-DQPSK and 8-DPSK modulation, and each earbud receives its own synchronized stream, so either one can be used alone. LE Audio support, including sharing audio with several listeners, was announced as a later over-the-air update. The JBL Headphones app remaps touch gestures, locates lost earbuds and switches the Smart Audio and Video modes. The maximum operating temperature is 45 C.
Pairing
The Tune Beam connects to phones, tablets and computers through A2DP 1.3.2 for music, AVRCP 1.6.2 for playback control and HFP 1.8 for calls. Charging runs from a 5 V 1 A supply over the supplied USB Type-C cable, and the box also includes ear tips in three sizes.
Alternatives
The JBL Tune Buds keep the same battery figures and ANC features but swap the stem for a bud shell with a larger 10 mm driver.
