The COSMO is an open-back full-size headphone from Moondrop built around a planar magnetic driver rather than the dynamic units found in most of the company's range. Moondrop presents it as a headphone in which the driver and the cavity form one integrated structure, with a lightweight, high-strength frame. The box contains the headphone, a 4.4 mm balanced cable, a 4.4 mm to 6.35 mm adapter, a manual, an anime-style card, a certificate plus an after-sales service card.
Key specs that matter
The driver uses a 100 mm diaphragm of nanoscale thickness, driven across its full surface by what Moondrop calls FDT, or Full Drive Technology. Frequency range is given as 13 Hz to 58 kHz, measured under IEC 61094 in free field, while the effective band is 20 Hz to 20 kHz to IEC 60318-4 at minus 3 dB. Nominal impedance measures 15 ohm, within 15 percent either way, at 1 kHz, and sensitivity is 100 dB per Vrms at 1 kHz. Each earcup carries a 3.5 mm socket.
Engineering and use context
The conductor pattern on the diaphragm is a highly elastic pure silver circuit produced by etching, and under the FDT principle the whole vibrating area carries effective driving tracks rather than leaving passive edges. An array of 36 extra-large N52 neodymium strip magnets, with its layout optimised by finite element analysis, sets up a magnetic field that covers the entire moving surface. Moondrop adds a secondary stress balance treatment for the diaphragm, intended to keep tension even over such a large film. On both the front and rear sides of the driver the cavity includes a waveguide for high-frequency phase control. The cable system uses a standard socket on each cup, so replacement leads are easy to source, and the stock cable is made of single-crystal copper.
Pairing
This planar, with a low impedance and only moderate sensitivity, asks for a source that can deliver current into a low impedance, which makes a desktop amplifier or a powerful balanced portable player a better choice than a phone output. The stock cable already suits a balanced output, and the bundled adapter lets the COSMO connect to a single-ended jack on a home amplifier. Being open at the back, the COSMO lets sound out and is not intended for public transport.
Alternatives
The Moondrop VENUS, a further planar over-ear from the same maker, combines a 100 mm diaphragm only 2 microns thick with 36 N52 magnets and an 18 ohm impedance.
