The ToneWinner TD-8 is a passive surround package made by Guangzhou Tonewinner Electronics that can be configured for five or seven channels. It consists of floorstanding main speakers, the TD-8C centre and TD-8S surrounds, all developed to work with the brand's own home cinema electronics. Tonewinner traces it to a product family that has gone through five generations since 1996. The complete system ships at a gross weight of 96 kg.
Key specs that matter
Each tower uses three ways and four drivers - two 8-inch woofers, one 6.5-inch midrange and a 1.1-inch tweeter with a silk dome. The maker quotes 30 Hz to 20 kHz, 89 dB at 1 W and 1 m and a nominal 4 ohm load, and suits amplifiers delivering 20 to 150 W. Each tower measures 280 x 1200 x 415 mm and weighs 41.5 kg. The TD-8C centre is a three-way unit with five drivers - two 6-inch woofers, two 4-inch midranges and a 1-inch tweeter - rated at 40 Hz to 20 kHz, 88 dB and 90 W, in an 830 x 239 x 312 mm cabinet weighing 18.8 kg. Each TD-8S surround pairs a 6.5-inch unit with a 1-inch tweeter and is rated at 60 Hz to 20 kHz, 85 dB and 45 W, measuring 235 x 380 x 178 mm at 13 kg. All three models present a 4 ohm impedance.
Engineering and use context
Cones for the mid and bass drivers have a natural fibre base layered with a high-damping mineral compound and sit in cast aluminium frames. Voice coils are wound from 5N oxygen-free copper on aluminium-magnesium formers rated for high temperatures, driven by large magnets and suspended on soft rubber surrounds. In the crossover, the tweeter path uses MKP metallized polypropylene film capacitors, while the mid and bass paths use non-polar capacitors with large oxygen-free copper inductors. The towers load their woofers through a rear bass reflex port and connect through gold-plated OFC binding posts. The cabinets are finished in red rosewood veneer with a black leather-effect painted front baffle. Tonewinner states that the system was tuned to meet Dolby AC-3 and DTS requirements for multichannel film soundtracks.
Pairing
Driving the towers requires amplification comfortable with a low nominal impedance. In the Tonewinner range, the AD-8300PA eleven-channel power amplifier provides 320 W into 8 ohm across the three front channels and 150 W into 8 ohm for the remaining eight, and can be driven by one of the brand's Dolby Atmos processors such as the AT-300. For stereo-only use, the towers can be run from a two-channel amplifier such as the AD-1PA+, which offers switchable Class A and AB operation.
Alternatives
A more compact five-channel package from the same maker is the ToneWinner TJ-K8, built around towers with two 8-inch woofers and a 1-inch PEI dome tweeter.
