The MODEL 40n is an integrated stereo amplifier from Marantz with streaming built in, designed so that only a pair of loudspeakers has to be added. It plays Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, Tidal and other services, along with personal music libraries, over AirPlay, Bluetooth and HEOS, and it takes TV audio through HDMI ARC. Voice control works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant or Apple Siri, and the finishes are Silver-Gold or Black.
Key specs that matter
Rated output is 70 W + 70 W into 8 ohm and 100 W + 100 W into 4 ohm. Frequency response runs from 5 Hz to 100 kHz, and total harmonic distortion is 0.02% from 20 Hz to 20 kHz into 8 ohm, with a damping factor of 100. The CD, line and recorder inputs need 220 mV at 20 kohm, the MM phono input 2 mV at 47 kohm and the power amp input 1.6 V at 15 kohm. S/N is quoted at 106 dB for CD and 87 dB for phono. The chassis is 442 mm wide, 130 mm tall and 432 mm deep, with a mass of 16.7 kg. Power draw is 220 W, or 0.3 W in standby.
Engineering and use context
HDAM-SA3 circuitry forms the power amplifier, which is fed by a double-shielded toroidal transformer. Volume is set electronically, with bass, treble and balance controls plus a Source Direct setting. The built-in phono equaliser handles moving-magnet cartridges. The front panel and side covers are aluminium, the top cover is steel and the chassis is SECC with a thicker double-layer bottom. Volume, input, tone, balance and record-out selector knobs are aluminium, as is the power button, and edge lighting has a dimmer. Through HEOS the amplifier can join other HEOS Built-in speakers in a whole-home system, with the same stream in each room or separate streams, and the HEOS app handles control. The supplied system remote also covers a matching CD player.
Pairing
Wired sources connect through four analogue RCA inputs covering phono, CD, line and recorder, a recorder output, one optical and one coaxial input, and an HDMI input with ARC that carries PCM only. A rear USB-A port reads mass storage devices and supplies 5 V at 1 A. There is no conventional pre out, but a subwoofer output offers a selectable low-pass filter at 40, 60, 80, 100 or 120 Hz. An external preamplifier can drive the power stage through the power amp direct input, and RC-5 bus terminals connect other Marantz units. Speakers attach to SPKT-1+ terminals.
Alternatives
Another stereo integrated in the Marantz catalogue is the MODEL 70, a lower-powered model with an MM phono stage, HDMI ARC and Bluetooth.
