The PM8006 is a stereo integrated amplifier from Marantz, now listed by the company among its archived products. The design is analogue only, without any DAC, network, USB or Bluetooth section, built around discrete Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Modules and a current feedback topology. Marantz offered it in black and in silver-gold, and the fascia is made of metal.
Key specs that matter
Marantz rates continuous output at 70 W into 8 ohm and 100 W into 4 ohm. Frequency response runs from 5 Hz to 100 kHz within plus or minus 3 dB, total harmonic distortion is 0.02 percent and the damping factor is 100. The line inputs have a sensitivity of 200 mV at 20 kOhm and reach 106 dB signal to noise with 2 V input. Only MM cartridges are supported by the phono stage, with 2 mV sensitivity at 47 kOhm and 87 dB signal to noise ratio. The power amp direct input takes 1.6 V at 15 kOhm and reaches 125 dB signal to noise. The amplifier draws 220 W, standby draw is 0.2 W, and the chassis measures 440 mm wide, 379 mm deep and 128 mm high with a weight of 12 kg.
Engineering and use context
Marantz uses HDAM-SA3 and HDAM-SA2 modules in the signal path. In the phono stage the equalisation is split into passive and active parts, RIAA correction takes place in an HDAM, and amplification is handled by an op-amp running in class A, a circuit Marantz names its own phono EQ. A toroidal transformer feeds a linear drive power supply with Schottky diodes. The layout of the circuit boards is symmetric, heat is taken away by aluminium extrusion heatsinks, and the bottom plate is triple-layered. Tone controls cover bass, mid and treble, with a balance control alongside, while Source Direct bypasses the tone stage. A linear volume control is used and a buffer amplifier sits on the CD input only. The unit supports auto power off, and the D-Bus socket and the RC001PMND remote allow system control of other Marantz components.
Pairing
Six line inputs, the MM phono input and one line output sit on gold-plated RCA sockets, and a pre-out plus a power amp direct input let the PM8006 act as a preamplifier or as a power amplifier inside a larger system. Four Marantz SPKT-1+ terminals drive speaker sets A and B, and a headphone jack is on the front. Using an MC cartridge requires a separate step-up transformer or head amplifier.
Alternatives
The Marantz MODEL 40n is the current integrated amplifier that the company lists as the upgrade to this model.
