NAD builds the C 388 as a HybridDigital integrated amplifier combining a moving magnet phono stage, a built-in DAC, aptX Bluetooth and two MDC slots for upgrade modules. NAD lists it at USD 1,499.
Key specs that matter
Continuous output exceeds 150 W per channel into 8 or 4 ohms. IHF dynamic power is 250 W into 8 ohms, 350 W into 4 ohms and 400 W into 2 ohms, and peak output current is above 20 A into 1 ohm for 1 ms. THD stays below 0.02% from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, noise is over 95 dB down A-weighted, with a damping factor above 150 referenced to 8 ohms. The chassis measures 435 x 120 x 390 mm and weighs 11.2 kg.
Engineering and use context
A customised Hypex UcD output stage runs in a fully balanced bridge configuration, and the power supply accepts 100 to 240 V mains. Line inputs use ultra-low-noise buffer amplifiers. The preamplifier stage has THD below 0.005% at 2 V output, noise more than 106 dB below 2 V IHF A-weighted, channel separation over 80 dB at 1 kHz and an input impedance of 22 kOhm plus 100 pF. Bass and treble controls adjust by 7 dB either way. The MM phono stage needs 1.44 mV, stays below 0.01% THD at 2 V output, keeps noise over 76 dB down per IHF and follows the RIAA curve within 0.3 dB. The headphone amplifier has 6 ohm output impedance, noise over 110 dB down into 32 ohms and THD under 0.005% at 1 V. Optical and coaxial digital inputs feed a DAC accepting up to 24 bit and 192 kHz, and the power supply delivers pure DC to every stage. It also has high output voltage capability, and the subwoofer and preamp connections are low impedance line outputs. The two Modular Design Construction slots take optional HDMI switching, USB and DSD playback, extra digital or analogue inputs, or a BluOS module that adds Wi-Fi and Ethernet networking with high resolution streaming. Standby draw is 0.5 W with auto standby on and network standby off.
Pairing
Speaker A and B terminals let two pairs of loudspeakers be connected, and a preamp output and subwoofer output extend the system. For custom installations the unit offers 12 V triggers, IR control and RS-232, and it is certified with Control4, Crestron, RTI, URC, AMX, Savant and Elan.
Alternatives
The NAD C 338 is a slimmer integrated model rated above 50 W per channel with Google Cast built in.
