Tube (Valve) Hi-Fi

A tube amplifier raises the signal with vacuum valves instead of transistors, so its output transformer makes loudspeaker choice part of the design. That pairing logic keeps valve gear a separate branch of Hi-Fi, from small single-ended integrateds to 250 W monoblocks.

What tube (valve) amplification is & why it matters

In a valve stage, a heated cathode emits electrons and a grid voltage controls their flow to the plate. Output tubes such as the 300B triode, EL34, KT88 or 6550 drive an output transformer that steps their high impedance down to a 4 or 8 ohm load. A single-ended 300B stage gives around 8 W, while push-pull circuits reach tens or hundreds of watts. Output impedance is higher than in a transistor amp, so speaker sensitivity and the impedance curve decide the result.

What you'll find in this tag

Launch news makes up most of the tag - integrated amps, power amps, preamplifiers and headphone amps from Cayin, Jadis, McIntosh, Air Tight, Margules and Rogue Audio. Guides compare tube and solid-state topologies, rank 300B single-ended designs and match high-sensitivity speakers to low-power valve amps. Tube-output sources appear too, such as the Taga Harmony TCD-70T CD player.

Key models & brands to know

Audio Research - the I/70 integrated runs four 6550 tubes for 70 W per channel. Cayin Jazz 70 - four EL34s give 17 W in triode or 35 W in ultralinear mode. Line Magnetic LM-300IA - a hand-built single-ended 300B integrated. Cary Audio CAD-300SEI - paired 300Bs for 2 x 15 W. Rogue Audio M250 Ultra - a monoblock with triode and ultralinear switching.
