The FRS-10 is the 10 inch model in the Signature FRS subwoofer series from Proficient Audio Systems, which spans three driver sizes - 8, 10 and 12 inch - all fed by the same amplifier rating. Proficient presents the line as a continuation of the work of Sunfire, a subwoofer brand active since 1994, and names three changes over the older Sunfire designs - more amplifier power, a redrawn cabinet with rounded corners, and setup from a smartphone app. The multivoltage version sold worldwide carries the same model code.

Key specs that matter

One high-excursion fiberglass-cone driver runs off a 1000 W peak Class D amplification stage. Proficient specifies a response of 24 Hz to 200 Hz within plus or minus 3 dB. The cabinet is built from 25 mm MDF and measures about 310 mm wide, 320 mm high and 330 mm deep, and the subwoofer weighs 15.7 kg. Signal arrives through RCA line-level inputs, and matching buffered outputs pass it on. Proficient covers it with a limited 2-year warranty.

Engineering and use context

Proficient uses a high back EMF driver design inherited from Sunfire, in which a stiff fiberglass cone is combined with a motor of high force so the driver can work against the air pressure inside a small enclosure while keeping its linear output under control. The aim is a large amount of low-frequency output from a box barely over 30 cm on each side. Five coats of high-gloss piano black lacquer cover the MDF, the finish Proficient uses across the whole Signature range. The built-in DSP is configured over Bluetooth Low Energy with the Sub Station app on a phone. Against the 8 inch FRS-8, which weighs 10.2 kg, the FRS-10 keeps the same lower limit but adds cone area and 5.5 kg of mass. A built-in 5 V USB port powers an optional wireless audio adapter that eliminates the interconnect between the subwoofer and the electronics and lets the cabinet stand anywhere a mains socket is available.

Pairing

Its RCA inputs take the LFE or sub pre-out of an AV receiver, a stereo preamp or any integrated model fitted with pre-outs. Proficient itself suggests running two Signature units together, and the buffered outputs let one FRS-10 hand the signal to a second one without an extra splitter. Because the amplifier accepts 100 to 240 V, the same unit works on mains supplies in different regions without a separate transformer.

Alternatives

The Proficient FRS-12 moves to a 12 inch fiberglass driver in a 19 kg cabinet and extends the plus or minus 3 dB response to 20 Hz.
