The FDS-12 is a powered subwoofer from the Protégé series of Proficient Audio, the American company that makes speakers for music, home cinema, architectural and outdoor use. Proficient shares its parent company with the former Sunfire brand, known for producing large bass output from very small cabinets, and Proficient presents the Protégé subwoofers as carrying that technology forward. The Protégé range is its entry line below the Signature series, and the FDS-12 uses three 12-inch drivers in a compact cube.

Key specs that matter

The FDS-12 combines one front-firing active 12-inch high-excursion polypropylene driver with two side-firing 12-inch polypropylene passive radiators, all with oversized magnets. The Class D amplifier delivers 600W peak. Frequency response is 24Hz to 160Hz (+/-3dB), and the crossover adjusts from 50Hz to 160Hz. The cabinet combines 20mm and 30mm MDF with internal bracing, and measures 375 x 393 x 394mm and weighs about 17kg, in matte black. It accepts 100 to 240V mains, and a USB port powers Proficient's optional internal wireless kit. Proficient suggests it for rooms of up to about 80 m2 and gives a two-year warranty.

Engineering and use context

Passive radiators are unpowered cones that move in response to the air pressure created by the active driver inside the sealed cabinet, working like a port but without a column of air that can chuff or resonate at high levels. Using two 12-inch radiators gives a large moving area that extends bass from a small box, which is how the FDS-12 reaches deep bass from a cabinet under 40cm on each side. Mounting the radiators on opposite sides means their reaction forces cancel, reducing cabinet movement. The oversized magnets create high motor force, giving strong back-EMF that controls the active driver's movement. Class D amplification delivers the power needed in a small space with little heat, and the mix of 20mm and 30mm MDF panels with internal bracing keeps the enclosure rigid against the pressure inside. The optional PAS-WIR-SUB-KIT-INT wireless kit plugs into the internal USB port, allowing the subwoofer to be placed anywhere in the room without a signal cable.

Pairing

The FDS-12 takes its signal from an AV receiver's sub out or a stereo amplifier's pre-outs, and its adjustable crossover suits compact satellite and bookshelf speakers. The side-firing radiators need a little space on each side of the cabinet.

Alternatives

Proficient Audio's own FRS-12 is the Signature series 12-inch subwoofer with a fibreglass-reinforced driver and a 1,000W amplifier.
