The FDS-15, full name Protege FDS Triple 15-inch Subwoofer, is the 15-inch model of four powered subwoofers in the Protege FDS series from Proficient Audio, a brand of Nice North America, and the series comes in 8, 10, 12 and 15 inch sizes. Proficient presents the line as carrying on the engineering of the Sunfire subwoofers, and it is aimed at home theatre and media room installations. Every model in the range uses one active driver with two passive radiators, a matte black cabinet and a multivoltage power supply.

Key specs that matter

The active driver is a 15-inch high-excursion woofer with a polypropylene cone, and it is joined by two passive radiators of the same 15-inch size and cone material. Frequency response is 19 Hz to 160 Hz within 3 dB, while the low-pass crossover is adjustable over a 50 Hz to 160 Hz span. The built-in Class D amplifier has a peak rating of 1,000 W, and Proficient gives no continuous power figure. The cabinet measures 483 x 508 x 502 mm and weighs 30 kg. The mains voltage can be selected between 100 V and 240 V, and Proficient covers the unit with a 2-year warranty.

Engineering and use context

Proficient built the whole series around passive radiators rather than a bigger single-driver enclosure, the stated aim being deeper bass from a smaller footprint than traditional one-driver boxes, and it names the compact profile as the reason the cabinets can be placed discreetly. The woofer follows a high back-EMF design with oversized magnets that raise the motor force acting on the cone. Amplifier power in the series scales with driver size, starting from 400 W peak in the FDS-8 with its 8-inch drivers and 500 W peak in the 10-inch FDS-10, which is rated down to 26 Hz. A built-in 5 V USB port with an integrated mount powers an optional wireless audio kit, which lets the subwoofer be positioned more freely in the room and cuts down on cable clutter.

Pairing

Line-level left and right inputs take a stereo feed from a preamplifier or integrated amplifier, and a separate LFE socket is there for the dedicated subwoofer channel in a surround system. An RCA high-pass output can pass the filtered signal on to the main amplifier, and phase is variable from 0 to 180 degrees to line the subwoofer up with the main speakers.

Alternatives

The Proficient Protege FDS-12 uses the same triple-driver layout with 12-inch drivers, a 600 W peak amplifier and a 375 x 393 x 394 mm cabinet weighing 17 kg.
