The Saga Signature is a passive three-way tower made by Avalon Acoustics, the Boulder, Colorado company founded in the 1980s by Charles Hansen and now led by designer Neil Patel. It belongs to the Signature series together with the Isis Signature and the Tesseract, and it is the upgraded form of the earlier Saga, which used a 1 inch concave carbon/glass tweeter, was rated to 45 kHz and asked for at least 25 W of amplification.

Key specs that matter

The Saga Signature uses four drivers per side. A 3/4 inch concave tweeter with a diamond diaphragm handles the top octaves, a 7 inch concave midrange with a ceramic cone and radial magnet covers the middle band, and two 13 inch composite woofers with low Q magnetic structures take the bass. Avalon rates the response from 20 Hz to 100 kHz and the sensitivity at 92 dB, with a nominal impedance of 4 ohm. The recommended amplifier range is 50 to 500 W. Each speaker stands 178 cm tall, 37 cm wide and 43 cm deep, and weighs 89 kg, so a pair comes close to 180 kg before packing.

Engineering and use context

Avalon builds the enclosure using its own Silent Inert Cabinet composite and process, an approach intended to keep the walls from storing and releasing energy. A constrained-mode damping system and a faceted cabinet with an inert wave launch platform are used to reduce edge diffraction from the baffle. The crossover follows the brand's all-phase topology and its wiring is done by hand with surface-only conductors, avoiding printed circuit boards entirely. Magnets across the driver array use neodymium, and each driver is individually tested and matched before assembly. Dual binding posts on the rear permit bi-wiring or bi-amping. Buyers can choose Quilted Cherry, Figured Walnut or Curly Maple veneer as standard, with Birdseye Maple and Polychrome offered as upgrades and deep gloss lacquer or painted RAL colours available to order.

Pairing

The high sensitivity means the Saga Signature does not need huge power to reach normal levels, yet big solid-state amplifiers remain within the maker window when the listening space is big. With a second amplifier, the dual posts let the woofer pair and the upper drivers be fed from separate channels. Given the weight of each cabinet, moving and positioning each speaker is a job for more than one person.

Alternatives

Within the same Signature series Avalon also lists the Isis Signature as a second passive tower in its current catalogue.
