The PM3.2 is a floorstanding loudspeaker from Avalon Acoustics, built as a smaller version of the brand's Saga Signature flagship, directly transferring that model's crossover topology and high-current elements into a nominal-sized cabinet. Avalon Acoustics founder Neil Patel designed the PM3 series specifically to achieve a standard of low-frequency reproduction never before attained in a loudspeaker of this size, occupying the sweet spot among the brand's three-way Precision Monitor line.

Key specs that matter

Rated response is 20Hz to 50kHz. Sensitivity is 90dB into 4 ohms nominal, with a wide recommended amplifier power range of 25-400W. The distinctive engineering feature is impedance held absolutely flat below 200Hz, deviating less than plus-or-minus 0.1 ohm - Avalon states no other transducer in the world can claim such accurate, efficient utilisation of amplifier energy, since this non-reactive load presents no back EMF to the driving amplifier, producing fast, clear low-frequency reproduction entirely free of group-delay error. The three-way driver complement uses a 1-inch convex Beryllium dome tweeter with a neodymium motor, a 3.5-inch cone midrange with a high-BL neodymium magnet system, and two 9-inch composite low-Q magnetic structure woofers. At 46 x 11 x 17 inches and 105-114 lbs per speaker depending on generation, crossover circuitry is hard-wired with surface-only conductors, deliberately eliminating the sonic effects printed-circuit boards can introduce, alongside proprietary all-phase crossover topologies and a constrained-mode damping system absorbing cabinet vibration. Standard finishes include Birdseye Maple and Polychrome, with premium options in Quilted Cherry, Curly Maple and Figured Walnut.

Sound and use context

Expect a transparent window into the recording - the PM3 reflects every change made anywhere in the system, from cabling and grounding to source components, with a clean, pure and coherent character that simply invites being driven harder.

Pairing

The 90dB sensitivity and benign 4 ohm nominal impedance make this speaker relatively easy to drive despite its considerable resolving power, and the wide 25-400W recommended range admits both moderately powerful and considerably ambitious amplifiers.

Alternatives

Avalon Acoustics' PM2.2 sits below this model as a more compact alternative, while the PM4.2 sits above it with greater scale, worth comparing directly with a specialist dealer to find the Precision Monitor tier best suited to a specific room.
