Floorstanding loudspeakers — Dynaudio Focus 50

The Focus 50 is the larger active floorstander in Dynaudio's Focus range, launched in 2022 as a wireless streaming system in which each tower carries its own amplifiers, DSP and network electronics. It takes drivers and ideas from several Dynaudio lines, including the Confidence and Contour hi-fi speakers and the Core and LYD professional studio monitors.

Key specs that matter

Focus 50 is a true three-way with four drivers - a 28 mm Cerotar soft dome with Hexis, a dedicated 15 cm MSP midrange and two 18 cm Esotec+ woofers working in parallel. Its digital filters hand over between drivers at 390 Hz and 4,700 Hz. Three class-D amplifiers are fitted per speaker, rated at 110 W for the tweeter, 280 W for the midrange and 280 W for the woofer pair, and Dynaudio quotes 1,000 W of peak power in total. Frequency response is 20 Hz to 22 kHz within plus or minus 3 dB at 85 dB, and 18 Hz to 36 kHz at the 6 dB points. There are two analogue RCA inputs, one Toslink and one coaxial input, Wi-Fi and Ethernet, and Bluetooth 4.2. Supported streaming services and protocols are AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Roon, UPnP and Qplay. The tower measures 215 x 1,140 x 305 mm, or 305 x 1,187 x 401 mm including feet and grille, at a weight of 33.5 kg.

Engineering and use context

The midrange unit is taken from the Contour 60 and uses a neodymium magnet with an aluminium voice-coil so it stays light and quick to respond, while the woofers combine copper voice-coils with Ferrite+ magnets. In the Cerotar tweeter, the Hexis inner dome from the Confidence series manages airflow and damps resonances behind the dome. All amplification is supplied by Pascal of Copenhagen, the company behind the amplifiers in Dynaudio's Core monitors. The cabinet follows the sealed box principle rather than using a port. Inter-speaker audio travels by WiSA at up to 24-bit and 96 kHz without a cable, or at up to 24-bit and 192 kHz over an RCA link when a wire can be run between the towers. The magnetic Smart Grille is sensed by the speaker, which changes its equalisation when the grille is on. Mains input covers 100 to 240 V at 50 or 60 Hz, maximum consumption is 280 W and standby consumption stays at 2 W or less. Cabinets come in either of two gloss lacquers, black or white, or in walnut or blonde wood.

Pairing

The built-in electronics remove the need for separate power amps or a network player, so a pair only requires sources such as a phono stage, a CD player with a digital output or a TV feeding the Toslink socket.
