Bookshelf Speakers — Triangle Titus Ez

The Titus Ez is the smallest stand-mount in Triangle's Esprit Ez range, a compact two-way model that introduces the French company's core technologies. It is intended for small rooms, desks and shelves, and because it shares its tweeter and cellulose midrange technology with the larger Esprit Ez models, it also works as a surround speaker alongside them.

Key specs that matter

A horn-loaded 25 mm titanium dome tweeter sits above a 130 mm (5.25 in) mid/woofer with a 100% natural cellulose diaphragm, and the cabinet is vented through a rear port. Response covers 55 Hz to 22 kHz (+/-3 dB) and sensitivity is 90 dB at 2.83 V/1 m. Nominal impedance is 8 ohms, dipping to a 3.8 ohm minimum. Triangle recommends amplifiers of 15 W to 100 W and quotes power handling of 60 W RMS. The enclosure measures 168 mm wide, 305 mm high and 267 mm deep, and each speaker weighs 5.9 kg.

Engineering and use context

In the Esprit Ez tweeter a horn is mounted in front of the titanium dome and its compression chamber, which raises efficiency and gives controlled directivity from a small baffle. The mid/woofer has an uncoated white cellulose cone with a small-pleat peripheral suspension, increasing the radiating surface for a given frame size. Its membrane profile, suspension shape and new dust cap were developed from the Magellan project, and the driver frame was redesigned to carry voice-coil heat away more quickly. The rear port extends the bass response of the small enclosure, so the speaker needs some space behind it to avoid excess low-frequency reinforcement from the wall. Crossover parts are copper inductors and polypropylene film capacitors, wired internally with Triangle's oxygen-free copper cable. The brushed aluminium terminal plate is shared with the rest of the Esprit Ez series, and the finishes are black ash, white, light oak and chestnut.

Pairing

Triangle recommends the Titus Ez for rooms of 8 to 20 m2. Because of the impedance dip, the amplifier should be stable into 4 ohms. In a home cinema system the Titus Ez can join the Comète Ez and the rest of the Esprit Ez range as a surround speaker, and a subwoofer fills in the octaves under the small cabinet's bass limit.
