Bookshelf Speakers — Triangle Comète Ez

The Comète Ez is a two-way model for stand or shelf use made by Triangle, the French manufacturer founded in 1980 in Soissons, and the larger of the pair of bookshelf models in its Esprit Ez range. The Ez generation of the Esprit line brought a revised midrange driver derived from the Magellan project, an updated horn-loaded tweeter and fibreglass bass units of a new construction.

Key specs that matter

A 25 mm titanium dome horn tweeter and a 165 mm mid/woofer work in a bass reflex enclosure vented at the front, crossing over at 3500 Hz. Frequency response runs from 49 Hz to 22 kHz (+/-3 dB), sensitivity is 89 dB/W/m, and impedance is 8 ohms nominal with a 4.2 ohm minimum. Triangle recommends 25 W to 130 W of amplifier power and rates power handling at 80 W. The cabinet is 200 mm wide, 400 mm high and 324 mm deep, and it weighs 9.3 kg net.

Engineering and use context

The tweeter places a titanium dome in a compression chamber in front of a horn, a Triangle design that raises efficiency, lowers distortion and controls directivity. The mid/woofer cone is white 100% natural cellulose pulp, and its small-pleat surround gives a larger effective radiating area than a conventional roll surround in a frame of the same size. Cone profile, suspension shape and dust cap all come from work on the Magellan range. Copper coils and metallised polypropylene capacitors go into the crossover, connected by Triangle's own OFC wire. Because the port faces forward, the rear panel stays clear, so placement near the wall behind it is easier than with rear venting. The brushed aluminium terminal plate is exclusive to the Esprit Ez series, and the box includes a magnetic grille and rubber feet.

Pairing

Triangle specifies the Comète Ez for rooms of 15 to 30 m2 and states that its speakers never fall below 3 ohms, so an integrated amplifier with output inside the recommended range is enough. The company also makes the S02 stand for this series, which raises the tweeter to the height of a seated listener's ears. For a matched surround layout, the Voce Ez centre uses the same cellulose drivers and the Titus Ez fills the rear positions as a smaller model.
