Michell Engineering is a British turntable maker founded in 1966 by John Michell and based in Borehamwood, north of London. The company started out making film models and precision parts, worked on models for Stanley Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey, and moved into turntables in the 1970s. It is known above all for the GyroDec, launched in 1982, and today it also builds tonearms and moving coil cartridges.
Range & what it's known for
The turntable range runs from the TecnoDec through the GyroDec and Gyro SE to the Orbe and Orbe SE. The GyroDec was designed to isolate the platter and arm from vibration, using a suspended pendulum sub-chassis and an inverted main bearing that pumps its own oil. The Orbe, introduced in 1995, became the top model. Supporting products include the TecnoArm tonearm, the Techno Weight counterweight upgrade, the HR Power Supply and the Gyropower QC motor supply. In 2019 the company added the Cusis E, Cusis S and Cusis M moving coil cartridges after five years of development. John Michell is also credited with inventing the screw-down record clamp.
Who owns it and where it's made
In 1969 the company began making parts for Transcriptors, and after that firm moved to Ireland in 1973 Michell took over production of the Hydraulic Reference under licence. Its own first deck, the Reference Electronic, followed in 1977. In 2002 John Michell passed daily management to Julie and Beverley, his daughters, together with son-in-law Stephen, and the business is still family-owned. Turntables, arms and cartridges are designed and made in Borehamwood.
