Gryphon Audio Designs is a Danish high-end audio maker founded in 1985 by Flemming E. Rasmussen and based in Ry, Denmark. Its reputation rests on heavy, cost-no-object power and integrated amplifiers, but its current catalogue also covers preamplifiers, phono stages, D/A converters, CD players, turntables, loudspeakers, cables, power conditioning and even furniture. Products are updated rarely, so individual models tend to stay in the range for many years.

Range & what it's known for

Amplification remains the backbone of the catalogue. Power amplifiers include the Apex, Essence and Mephisto, while the Diablo 333 is the integrated model that many buyers meet first. The EOS 5 represents the loudspeaker side, and the PowerZone 3 handles mains conditioning. Two engineering habits run through the electronics. Circuits follow a dual mono layout, with independent channels and separate power supplies for each side, and the classic amplifiers ran in pure Class A, which explains the large heat sinks and high power dissipation. Black acrylic front panels give the units their recognisable dark look.

Who owns it and where it's made

Ownership stays private, with Rasmussen still holding the business. Rasmussen trained in fine arts and graphic design and, before Gryphon, ran 2R Marketing, a Danish import business for high-end audio. Engineering is led by chief designer Tom Moeller. Products are developed and assembled in Gryphon's factory in Ry, and each unit ships with an individual quality control certificate, so every component remains traceable through the service records.

The lineup in this catalog

Amplifiers and loudspeakers, with models in more than one category. Entry electronics start at roughly EUR 10,000, and the biggest systems pass EUR 500,000 for the largest loudspeaker systems.

Who it's for

Gryphon suits owners building a no-compromise system who want amplification with serious power reserves and are ready to give space and ventilation to large, hot-running chassis. The Diablo 333 is the natural way in for a one-box setup. From there the path leads to a dedicated preamplifier feeding stereo or mono power amps such as the Essence or Apex, and finally to matching Gryphon sources and loudspeakers for a single-brand system.
