The VT-E is a vertical turntable from Pro-Ject Audio Systems - the record spins upright rather than flat, and the player can either stand on a shelf or hang on a wall with the mounting kit supplied. Pro-Ject built it around simple setup, so the deck is ready to play once unpacked. Because the arm position depends on the orientation, it is sold in an R version for right-handed users and an L version for left-handed users, and in matt black, matt red or matt white.
Key specs that matter
Speed is changed by hand between 33 and 45 rpm. A low-vibration synchronous motor fed by a DC power supply drives the platter by way of a silicone belt, and total consumption is 4.5 W. Speed variance is 0.8 percent at 33 rpm and 0.7 percent at 45 rpm, and wow and flutter are 0.29 and 0.27 percent. The 300 mm MDF platter weighs 0.8 kg, is topped by felt and rides on a stainless steel bearing, with 65 dB given for signal to noise. An 8.6 inch aluminium arm of 218.5 mm effective length, 22.0 mm overhang and 8.0 g effective mass carries a pre-mounted Ortofon OM5e cartridge. Its included counterweight covers cartridges of 3 to 5.5 g, and the tracking force range of 0 to 25 mN is preset to 18 mN. Standing on its base the VT-E measures 430 x 345 x 245 mm, while on the wall the depth falls to 130 mm and the height to 310 mm at the same 430 mm width. Net weight is 2.8 kg.
Engineering and use context
A record held vertically cannot rely on gravity to stay on the platter, so a clamp screws it firmly in place and keeps it from moving during play. Tracking force and anti-skating are both set before the unit leaves the factory, so playback starts without any adjustment by the owner. The two footprints make the VT-E a fit for narrow shelves or for display on a wall, where coloured pressings and picture discs stay on view while they play. Pro-Ject packs the power supply, the record clamp, a gold-plated RCA cable, a felt mat, an adapter for 7 inch singles, the wall-mounting kit and an allen key with each deck.
Pairing
The VT-E has no internal phono preamplifier, so its RCA output must go to a moving magnet phono input on the amplifier or to a separate MM phono stage, and the maker lists its compact Phono Box E among matching products. From there any amplifier with passive or active speakers completes the system.
Alternatives
The Pro-Ject VT-E BT keeps the same upright design and adds a built-in MM phono preamplifier plus a Bluetooth transmitter.
