The UltraDeck is a belt-driven turntable from MoFi Electronics, the equipment brand linked to the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab record label, and its tonearm is custom-developed and manufactured in the USA. MoFi explains that the Ultra name stands for the Mobile Fidelity aim of reproducing recorded sound beyond the status quo, and the deck is intended for standard LPs as well as the company's UltraDisc One-Step limited-edition pressings. It is offered without a cartridge or in packages with the UltraTracker, the MasterTracker or the UltraGold MC fitted.

Key specs that matter

Two playback speeds are offered, 33 1/3 and 45 rpm. Its platter is machined from Delrin to a thickness of 33 mm and weighs 3.1 kg. MoFi rates wow and flutter at 0.017% to 0.025% with a 74 dB signal-to-noise figure. Mains versions exist for 120 V at 60 Hz, 220 to 230 V at 50 Hz and 100 V at 50 Hz, and consumption stays below 5 W. The complete turntable measures 500 mm wide and 362 mm deep and weighs 10.5 kg.

Engineering and use context

Power reaches the platter from a 300 rpm AC synchronous motor with a stepped Delrin pulley, and the belt is moved between the two pulley positions to choose the speed. Damping materials decouple the motor from the rest of the chassis so that its vibration is kept away from the platter and stylus. Delrin is a polymer developed by DuPont, and MoFi cites its highly crystalline structure as a good impedance match to vinyl. Under the platter sits a hardened-steel inverted bearing that combines steel, bronze and sapphire at very low tolerances. Three aluminium plates are bonded to an MDF body in a constrained layer arrangement that also adds mass, and the included anti-vibration feet were developed together with Harmonic Resolution Systems. The 10-inch Ultra tonearm is a straight aluminium tube on a gimbaled bearing that runs on ball bearings for low friction in the horizontal and vertical directions. Its overhang is 18 mm and the offset angle is 22.8 degrees with plus or minus 2 degrees of adjustment.

Pairing

The arm accepts cartridges weighing between 5 g and 10 g. Cardas Audio wiring runs from the headshell leads to gold-plated RCA connectors, ready for a lead to any separate phono stage or to an amplifier whose inputs include one for vinyl.

Alternatives

The MoFi StudioDeck is the lower turntable in the same range, using a 19 mm Delrin platter of 1.76 kg with a 10-inch gimbaled aluminium arm of the same geometry.
