The MasterDeck is a belt-drive record player with three speeds from MoFi Electronics, designed by Allen Perkins together with vinyl enthusiasts and made at the company's facility in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It is supplied with a 10-inch hybrid unipivot and gimbal tonearm, and it was announced in November 2023 at USD 5,995. The tonearm is based on a carbon fibre tube, and the frame comes in two solid wood finishes.
Key specs that matter
The motor is a DC synchronous design with a three-phase brushless AC drive and optical speed regulation. It turns the platter at 33 1/3, 45 or 78 rpm, each with fine trim adjustment shown on a four-digit LED readout. The platter is a 44 mm thick hybrid of aluminium with an integrated Delrin surface and weighs 6.5 kg, and it is driven by a round belt made from a proprietary material. MoFi gives the overall size as 508 mm wide and about 381 mm deep, and the weight as 17 kg. Power consumption is under 5 W, and versions exist for 120 V 60 Hz, 220 to 230 V 50 Hz and 100 V 50 Hz mains. No dust cover is included. Harmonic Resolution Systems isolation feet give 5.5 degrees of freedom, and MoFi states that the deck is designed and manufactured exclusively in the USA.
Engineering and use context
The platter spins on an encapsulated spiral groove inverted bearing designed for low friction. The tonearm combines unipivot and gimbal principles in a dual-pivot layout with a straight, damped carbon fibre armtube, 18 mm of overhang and a detachable headshell. It is wired with Cardas Audio cable and offers adjustment for azimuth, VTA, overhang and anti-skate, and it accepts cartridges weighing between 5 and 14 g. The plinth uses a constrained layer MDF core with an aluminium top plate, set inside a solid wood frame finished in walnut or black ash. The HRS feet decouple the whole deck from its support.
Pairing
A cartridge is required to complete the front end, and the 5 to 14 g weight window suits a broad range of MM and MC pickups. MoFi also sold the deck as a package with its UltraGold moving coil cartridge and MasterPhono preamplifier, which gives a matched starting point. The 78 rpm speed means owners of shellac discs can spin them after fitting an appropriate stylus. Because there is no lid, a clean location away from dust matters.
Alternatives
The MoFi UltraDeck is a simpler two-speed belt-drive turntable with a 10-inch Ultra tonearm, a 33 mm Delrin platter and HRS feet, weighing 10.5 kg.
