The StudioDeck is the entry-level belt-drive turntable from MoFi Electronics, and the name links the company's record label studio with its hardware side. MoFi states that it was designed in collaboration with outside audio designers and that the deck is custom designed and made in the USA, with the tonearm included.

Key specs that matter

Playback speeds are 33 1/3 and 45 rpm, with drive coming from a 300 rpm AC synchronous motor. The platter is 19 mm thick Delrin and weighs 1.76 kg. Wow and flutter is rated at 0.017 to 0.025 percent, while signal-to-noise is quoted as 72 dB. The supplied tonearm is a 10-inch straight aluminium design on a gimbaled bearing. Overhang is 18 mm and the offset angle is 22.8 degrees, adjustable by 2 degrees either way, and the arm accepts cartridges weighing 5 to 10 g. Power draw is under 5 W, and versions exist for 120 V 60 Hz, 220 to 230 V 50 Hz and 100 V 50 Hz mains. The deck measures 500 x 137 x 362 mm and weighs 8.7 kg.

Engineering and use context

The motor pulley is made of Delrin and is stepped, with two positions for the two speeds. Damping materials isolate the motor from the plinth so that its vibrations stay clear of the platter and the stylus, and the motor is specified for speed stability and pitch accuracy. The plinth uses constrained layer damping, with an aluminium plate bonded to an MDF body to add mass. Delrin, a polymer developed by DuPont, was chosen for the platter because MoFi considers its crystalline structure a close impedance match to vinyl. Beneath the platter sits an inverted bearing in which steel, bronze and Teflon parts work together at very low tolerances, a combination MoFi says is otherwise found in far more expensive decks. The tonearm, also developed and built in the USA, provides adjustment of tracking force, VTA, azimuth and anti-skate. Its supplied anti-vibration feet were developed with the engineering team of Harmonic Resolution Systems.

Pairing

MoFi's own moving-magnet UltraTracker at 9.7 g and its moving-coil UltraGold MC at 7.3 g both fall inside the weight window of the supplied arm. For amplification of the cartridge signal, MoFi offers its UltraPhono Pro phono stage, which has five loading values and gain settings that cover both moving-magnet and moving-coil designs through one input.

The MoFi UltraDeck is the higher MoFi turntable model, with a 33 mm Delrin platter weighing 3.1 kg and a 10-inch Ultra tonearm running on ball bearings.
