The Relveo is a twin-belt turntable from the British maker AVID, launched during the company's 30th anniversary as its first new deck in 12 years. It was conceived and engineered by AVID founder and CEO Conrad Mas and is handmade in England. Buyers can take it complete with the ALTUS v2 tonearm at GBP 6,900, USD 10,995 or EUR 8,995, or as a bare deck at GBP 5,500, USD 8,995 or EUR 7,495. Sold on its own, the ALTUS v2 arm is valued at GBP 1,650.

Key specs that matter

Playback runs at 33.3 or 45.0 rpm, and both speeds can be fine-adjusted. The drive uses two belts pulled by a 24 V AC synchronous motor rated at 12 mNm of torque. The platter weighs 7.0 kg and is machined in-house from a solid billet of aluminium, with extra mass placed toward its rim. Under it sits an inverted bearing in stainless steel, whose thrust point pairs tungsten carbide with sapphire and needs no lubrication or routine maintenance. Overall size is 440 mm wide, 370 mm deep and 200 mm high, and the deck weighs 13.3 kg without its power supply. The external supply accepts 100 to 240 V AC at 50 or 60 Hz and draws no more than 20 W.

Engineering and use context

AVID builds the rotating assembly in two parts, a main platter and a subplatter joined by what the company calls modal coupling to control vibration. Because the bearing has a single captive contact point, lateral play and the rumble it would cause are ruled out by design. Isolation comes from a newly developed conical three-point suspension using Sorbothane elastomer, which AVID says helps on suspended floors. The subchassis is cast from large-grain aluminium with a coating that damps high-frequency vibration, and the spindle is press-fitted into it. A single-action aluminium clamp with a stainless steel grounding point and a resin-impregnated felt mat complete the platter top. Speed is governed by a bespoke DSP vari-speed control unit, individually calibrated and housed in its own casework with a large mains transformer.

Pairing

The supplied ALTUS v2 arm uses micron-tolerance bearings and a dual adjustable bias compensation system, so the owner only needs to choose a cartridge and a phono stage. Buyers who prefer a different arm can order the bare deck, since AVID offers adapters for alternative tonearms.

Alternatives

The AVID Ingenium is a far lighter AVID turntable with a 2.5 kg platter, a TA-3 arm and a net weight of 5.9 kg.
