The Acutus Reference Mono is the top tier of the Acutus turntable family from AVID HiFi, a British maker of belt-drive decks and tonearms. AVID positions it above the other Acutus versions, and the difference lies not in the deck itself but in its very large dual-mono power supply. The turntable is finished in polished chrome, and AVID presents the whole package as its uncompromised Acutus design.

Key specs that matter

Drive comes from a hand-built 24 V AC synchronous motor rated at 140 mNm, which AVID says is roughly ten times more powerful than conventional turntable motors, turning the platter through two round-section belts. Speeds are 33.3 and 45.0 rpm, selected and fine-trimmed through a DSP vari-speed control unit. The platter is chrome-plated aluminium weighing 10 kg. The deck measures 460 x 400 x 210 mm overall with a footprint of 410 x 360 mm and weighs 19 kg. The separate supply measures 500 x 450 x 240 mm and weighs 52 kg. Mains input covers 100 to 240 V at 50 or 60 Hz, with consumption of 20 W at most.

Engineering and use context

Inside the power supply a DSP-controlled preamplifier feeds two mono power amplifiers, each driving one coil of the motor independently. The high torque brings the heavy platter up to speed within seconds. The bearing is inverted - a tungsten carbide ball runs on a sapphire jewel inside a stainless steel housing, a layout that removes lateral play and needs no maintenance. The subchassis rides on a tunable 3-point spring suspension with a vertical resonance of 2.5 Hz and a lateral resonance of 4.5 Hz. A resin mat sits on the platter to reflect vibration back rather than store it, and the supplied clamp works in two stages, first grounding the record and then pulling it flat against the mat to remove warps.

Pairing

Arm boards follow the SME mounting template, and adapters let the owner fit either a single tonearm or two at once, with the suspension rated for a combined arm load of up to 3 kg. That makes AVID's own Altus V2 or Nexus V2 arms straightforward choices, while a second arm position suits owners who keep a dedicated mono cartridge alongside a stereo one. With both boxes weighing 71 kg together, a rigid support with room for the large supply is needed.

Alternatives

The AVID Acutus Dark Iron uses the same platter and suspension but runs from a compact 3.5 kg DSP supply with an 80 VA transformer and adds an integrated motor housing.
