The Planar 6 is a Rega turntable whose plinth uses an ultra-lightweight Tancast 8 polyurethane foam core, a material that was originally developed for use in the aerospace industry. The core is sandwiched between skins of high pressure laminate, which Rega describes as very thin yet extremely rigid. The deck carries the hand-assembled RB330 tonearm and ships with its own Neo PSU.

Key specs that matter

A dual layer float glass platter, combining smoked and clear glass, rests on a single piece machined aluminium sub-platter. The drive comes from a 24 V low noise synchronous motor turning a custom pulley fitted with the EBLT Reference upgrade belt as standard. The RB330 can be ordered with a factory-fitted Nd5 or Nd7 moving magnet cartridge or an Ania Pro moving coil. With the lid closed the turntable measures 447 x 120 x 360 mm and weighs 5.2 kg, while the separate Neo PSU box is 180 x 50 x 155 mm. The finish is Polaris matt grey or matt white with an edge trim in high gloss black polymer.

Engineering and use context

Rega matches each motor by hand to its own Neo PSU for anti-vibration control, and the supply provides electronic speed selection with fine adjustment, so the belt does not need to be moved between speeds. Current shipments use the MK2 version of the Neo PSU, linked to the deck through a mini DIN connection. Rega's double brace technology is paired with integral, custom-matched aluminium tonearm and hub pillars to keep the path between arm and bearing rigid and accurate. The RB330 was drawn with 3D CAD and CAM tools and, according to Rega, sums up more than 35 years of its tonearm design work. It has a new bearing housing and high precision bearing assemblies intended for almost friction-free movement. Manufacturing defects are covered by a limited lifetime warranty from Rega.

Pairing

The cartridge choice decides the phono stage. The Nd5 and Nd7 need an MM input, while the Ania Pro moving coil needs an amplifier or separate phono preamplifier offering a moving coil input, connected through the pair of RCA phono sockets on the deck. The Neo PSU sits beside the turntable in its own compact case and connects by cable, so it can stand on the same shelf. All three cartridge options are fitted at the factory on the same RB330 arm.

Alternatives

Further up the range, the Rega Planar 10 Ref pairs a skeletal Tancast 8 plinth with the RB3000 tonearm and a custom-matched P10-PSU.
