The Planar 10 is a belt-drive turntable from Rega whose motor mounting method comes from the company's Naiad turntable. Its plinth is 30 percent lighter than that of the original RP10, and it is supplied with a dedicated external power supply and a choice of factory-fitted Apheta 3 or optional Aphelion 2 cartridge.

Key specs that matter

Playback speeds are 33 and 45 rpm, set electronically. The motor is a 24 V synchronous low vibration unit, and the platter is ceramic oxide. The RB3000 reference tonearm comes fitted, and both cartridge options use the Rega three-point mounting system. With its dust cover the deck measures 420 x 115 x 350 mm and weighs 4.7 kg, and the P10 PSU is 218 x 80 x 320 mm with a weight of 3 kg. Finishes are Matt Polaris Grey and Matt White, the latter added in April 2023, and a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects applies.

Engineering and use context

The skeletal plinth uses a Tancast 8 polyurethane foam core, a material from the aerospace industry, sandwiched between high-pressure laminate skins. Double Brace technology adds a ceramic top brace and a phenolic resin bottom brace. The platter is compressed, fired and diamond-cut, and its flywheel effect and coupling to the sub-platter were modified for this model. The motor mounts from the bottom, a method taken from the Naiad, and each motor is hand-tuned and matched to its own power supply before installation, with vibration removal and speed adjustments done at the factory. Inside the P10 PSU a DSP generator with a high stability crystal produces a near-perfect sinusoidal waveform, with adjustable fine speed and anti-vibration control. The reference EBLT belt is made from a proprietary rubber compound that took three years of research with chemists, produced on precision tools to be perfectly round and dimensionally accurate. The single-piece dust cover is removable.

Pairing

The RB3000 has a preloaded bearing with a tolerance under one thousandth of a millimetre, a hardened tool steel bearing spindle and a hand-polished aluminium arm tube, and no adhesive is used anywhere in its assembly. Because the Apheta 3 or Aphelion 2 is installed and aligned at the factory, the arm arrives ready for use, and the matching phono stage is left to the owner.
