The Planar 3 RS Edition from Rega is a belt-driven record deck supplied as a complete package, with the RB330 tonearm already mounted and fitted with the Nd5 moving-magnet cartridge. Rega adds its Neo Mk2 power supply to the bundle, so the buyer gets the deck, arm, cartridge and external motor controller from one maker. The plinth wears a dark brushed metallic surface edged in high gloss black. Rega covers the deck with a limited lifetime warranty for manufacturing faults.
Key specs that matter
Playback runs at 33 1/3 or 45 RPM, selected electronically from the Neo Mk2 unit in steps of 0.01 RPM for fine adjustment. A 24 V low-noise, low-vibration motor with a CNC-machined aluminium pulley drives a sub-platter through a Reference EBLT belt. On top sits a 12 mm platter of opti-white float glass with a polished edge. The Nd5 uses an elliptical nude polycrystalline diamond stylus on an aluminium cantilever. Overall size with the dust cover shut is 447 x 117 x 360 mm, and the deck weighs 6.0 kg.
Engineering and use context
Rega describes the plinth as the stiffest it has built at Planar 3 level. It is an HPL laminate with a skin of aluminium metal, reinforced by a double brace, a 3 mm phenolic brace underneath and a metallised phenolic brace on top. Each motor is hand-tuned to its own Neo Mk2 supply, whose anti-vibration circuit is set for that individual motor. The Neo Mk2 itself runs from a Rega PS1 wall adapter, outputs AC and draws 7.2 W. The RB330 arm is assembled by hand and uses a stiffer vertical bearing housing, a refined bias spring assembly and an integrated arm clip. Inside the Nd5, the low-inductance generator is wound with 1,275 turns of 38 micron wire, and the pole gap is optimised for linearity and channel separation. A newly devised generator geometry is aimed at close balance between left and right channels. The Reference EBLT belt is specified by Rega for accuracy of speed control.
Pairing
Signal leaves the deck through RCA phono sockets, and power enters by a mini DIN connector from the Neo Mk2 box. Because the Nd5 is a moving-magnet design, any standard MM phono stage or an amplifier with an MM input will accept it without a step-up transformer. Since the cartridge arrives already mounted on the arm, no separate cartridge purchase is needed to start playing records.
Alternatives
The Rega Planar 6 moves up to a foam-core plinth with a dual-layer glass platter and also carries the RB330 arm.
