The Planar 2 is a Rega belt-driven record player developed over two years alongside the current Planar 3. It combines the hand-assembled RB220 tonearm with a new 24 V low noise motor, an acrylic high gloss laminated plinth and a newly designed central bearing, and it comes with a Rega Carbon moving magnet cartridge fitted. Since May 2024 the Nd3 moving magnet cartridge has also been offered as a factory-fitted option.
Key specs that matter
The deck plays records at 33 and 45 rpm. Its platter is a 10 mm sheet of Optiwhite float glass, and the central bearing is an 11 mm self securing brass design for which a patent is pending. Lid closed, the deck is 447 mm wide, 117 mm tall and 360 mm deep, with a mass of 5.5 kg. Finish choices are walnut effect plus gloss black and gloss white, all backed by Rega's lifetime limited warranty on manufacturing faults.
Engineering and use context
The self securing brass bearing is designed to give a better fit and put less stress on the bearing, preventing the transfer of potential energy. The low noise, low vibration motor assembly comes with an updated PCB that is intended to minimise noise and vibration. The advanced EBLT drive belt has been fitted as standard since March 2021. Rega made the plinth stiffer than before and moved the power switch to an ergonomic position, and redesigned feet with an improved foot assembly increase stability while reducing vibration passed to the supporting surface. A dust cover is included as standard with every unit, smoked on the walnut effect version and clear on the two gloss finishes, and a simple multi-lingual quick start guide is also packed in the box.
Pairing
The RB220 relies on Rega's own patented low friction bearings, held in a new, stiffer and lighter bearing housing, together with the latest custom aluminium arm tube and an integrated arm clip. Rega lists an effective mass of 11 g for the arm and a mounting distance of 222 mm from platter centre to arm hole centre. Its adjustable bias, updated in autumn 2020, gives more flexibility and a broader range of compatible cartridges, which matters to owners who later swap the factory cartridge. With the Carbon or the Nd3 fitted, the deck must be connected to an MM-capable phono input.
Alternatives
The Rega Planar 3 is the turntable that was developed in parallel with this one over the same two-year programme and sits alongside it in the Planar series.
