The Planar 1 Plus is the Rega belt-drive deck that takes the plug and play Planar 1 format and adds an integrated moving magnet phono preamplifier, based on the design of the company's Fono Mini. Because of that built-in stage, the deck can feed a line level input directly, and it comes with the RB110 tonearm and a factory-fitted Carbon moving magnet cartridge.
Key specs that matter
Record speeds are 33 and 45 rpm. The motor is a bespoke 24 V low noise synchronous unit, and the platter is a 23 mm high mass phenolic design. Measured with the lid closed, the deck is 447 mm wide, 117 mm high and 360 mm deep, and it weighs 4.35 kg. The arm uses a 111 g balance weight. Buyers can choose between matt black, matt white and walnut effect finishes, with Rega's lifetime limited warranty covering defects in manufacture.
Engineering and use context
The motor assembly gains an aluminium pulley and a revised motor circuit board, and the advanced EBLT drive belt is supplied as standard for improved speed performance and accuracy. The high mass of the phenolic platter gives an improved flywheel effect meant to aid speed stability. The central bearing housing holds a precision main bearing made of brass. A custom foot design adds stability and reduces vibration, and a motor cover tray with integrated cooling encloses the drive. Rega moved the on/off switch to an ergonomic position on the underside of the plinth and describes the appearance of the plinth as vastly improved. The phono stage sits directly beneath the tonearm and has 40 dB of gain, input loading of 47 kohm in parallel with 220 pF and an output impedance of 1 kohm. Its maximum output level is 370 to 410 mV, the signal to noise ratio is 75 dB A-weighted relative to maximum output, and frequency response runs from 14 Hz at the -3 dB point to 100 kHz at the -0.6 dB point. RIAA accuracy between 100 Hz and 20 kHz is within 0.4 dB and typically better than 0.25 dB.
Pairing
The RB110 arm is hand assembled and has bespoke, patented bearings of very low friction developed in-house, with a pre-set bias assembly so that no bias adjustment is required. With the Carbon cartridge installed at the factory and the balance weight matched for plug and play operation, the supplied phono cables link the deck to any ordinary line input.
Alternatives
The Rega Planar 1 uses the same chassis, arm and cartridge but has no internal preamplifier, so it must be wired to an amplifier phono socket or a standalone preamp.
