The Juke Box E1 is a Pro-Ject Audio Systems all-in-one unit joining a belt-drive turntable, phono stage, Bluetooth receiver, line preamplifier and stereo power amplifier in one chassis, so only passive speakers need to be added. Pro-Ject also sells it as the Juke Box E1 HiFi Set at EUR 799 including VAT, bundled with a pair of Speaker Box 5 E two-way bass reflex speakers and 3 m Connect it LS E Flex cables. The composite fibre plinth is CNC-machined and handmade in Europe, finished in high gloss black, white or red, and walnut is a further option.
Key specs that matter
The amplifier delivers 2 x 50 W into 4 ohm. Sources connect by Bluetooth or through a single analogue line socket, while the rear panel offers speaker terminals, a fixed line output carrying only the turntable signal, and a phono output. Switching between 33 and 45 rpm is electronic. The maker lists speed variance of 0.7 % at 33 rpm and 0.6 % at 45 rpm, and wow and flutter of 0.25 % and 0.23 %. The lightweight low-friction 8.6 inch aluminium arm measures 218.5 mm in effective length, 22.0 mm of overhang and 7.0 g effective mass. Maximum power draw is 110 W, and the unit measures 415 x 118 x 334 mm (WxHxD) and weighs 5 kg net.
Engineering and use context
This version brought a reworked tonearm with a new headshell, a damped DC motor, electronic speed change and a new ABS polymer main platter stiffened by purpose-designed ridges to limit resonance. The stainless steel main bearing runs in a bronze bushing and the belt is silicone. The plinth is made so that no hollow spaces remain inside. Tracking force and anti-skating come preset for the pre-mounted Ortofon OM5e cartridge. Volume uses a 32-step digital potentiometer, and a high contrast display on top shows the level and the active input, and pressing the volume knob switches inputs. The infrared remote handles power, input, volume, a loudness preset and bass and treble adjustment. An acrylic dust cover with adjustable hinges, a felt mat and gold-plated sockets complete the package.
Pairing
Pro-Ject argues that a separate amplifier lets the speakers stand well apart and away from the deck, which reduces the risk of acoustic feedback compared with players that have built-in speakers. The fixed line output can pass the record signal to a further amplifier such as the Head Box.
Alternatives
The Pro-Ject Juke Box S2 is the sister one-box player fitted with an acrylic platter, a Pick it 25A cartridge and an added variable output.
