The Reed 1H 10.5-inch is the mid-length version of the 1H tonearm from Reed, a Lithuanian company of five people founded in 2007 in Kaunas by Vidmantas Triukas, who has been building audio equipment since 1985 and holds three patents from his research into acoustic noise transmission in materials. Reed describes the 1H as the 2023 addition to its entry level series, and it is the first Reed arm whose wand is made mainly of carbon fibre rather than wood. Versions of 9.5 and 12 inches complete the family. The US price starts at USD 5,195, below the USD 5,395 of the 2G and the USD 5,595 of the 2B, and custom builds take three to four weeks. In the UK the shortest 1H is listed at GBP 3,098.

Key specs that matter

At 10.5 inches the pivot sits 251.6 mm from the spindle, a figure Reed also gives as the mounting distance, while the arm needs an overhang of 15.4 mm and uses an offset angle of 20.7 degrees. Its effective mass is 15 g, between the 12 g of the shortest 1H and the 18 g of the 12-inch model. Height can be set anywhere from 28 to 48 mm. The arm is finished in Seashell White or Black, and a 2-year warranty applies in the UK.

Engineering and use context

Reed damps the carbon fibre tube internally with soft wood so that its acoustic properties come close to those normally typical of wood, the material chosen for the interchangeable wands of the Reed 2B. The bearing is of cardanic type - thrust rotation bearings work on the vertical axis and thrust pivot bearings on the horizontal one, a layout chosen to limit wobbling of the moving parts. Anti-skating is magnetic and follows the system of the Reed 3P. Adjustments cover azimuth and VTA, and the headshell can be replaced. Unlike the more expensive Reed arms, the 1H has no captive tonearm lead, so the signal exits either through a 5-pin DIN socket or through Finewire 37 wiring.

Pairing

The base fits most turntables directly, and an adapter is available where the armboard is not compatible. Two wiring routes exist. With the DIN socket version, which ships with no tonearm cable, the owner has to buy an aftermarket phono lead separately. The wired version instead comes with a 1.25 m cryogenically treated Finewire cable terminated in Klei RCA plugs, ready for a phono stage input.

Alternatives

The Reed 2B in its 10.5-inch form moves up to a four-bearing ceramic pivot, interchangeable wooden wands and dual-handle anti-skating in place of carbon fibre.
