The PH 5.3 is the valve-equipped version of the modular phono preamplifier pair that AVM introduced into its Evolution range in September 2026. Its output stage is AVM's own valve line stage, and the German company quotes a service life of roughly 20,000 hours for the fitted valves. Assembly is done by hand in Malsch, Germany, followed by inspection and a multi-day burn-in. In silver or black it is listed at EUR 5,990 in Europe.

Key specs that matter

Both MM and MC pickups can be used. Gain has five settings spanning -10 dB to +10 dB of basic sensitivity. For moving coil there are six impedance options, and for moving magnet six capacitance options. Six equalisation curves are on board, which covers older pressings made to pre-RIAA standards as well as modern records. The switchable subsonic filter works at 30 Hz, and mono operation and phase inversion can be selected. Balanced XLR outputs reach 14 V and unbalanced RCA outputs 7 V. Phono inputs are RCA with grounding posts, and a dedicated 15 V output rated at 1.5 A can power a turntable motor unit. Chassis width is 43 cm.

Engineering and use context

The input and equalisation circuits handle the small cartridge signal, while the valve stage at the end drives the outgoing line level into the cables and the following preamplifier. A single expansion slot at the rear accepts an optional board for balanced MC, single-ended MC or single-ended MM, which adds a second phono input for another arm or deck. Settings for gain, cartridge load, phase and the filter are reachable both on the front panel and through the RC 3 PH remote handset made of aluminium, so load changes can be tried from the listening seat. Colour choices are silver aluminium and brushed black, and the CELLINI Edition adds a chrome front, polished by hand. At launch AVM marked the complete technical data as coming soon, so weight, power draw and the exact valve types were not yet stated.

Pairing

The dual output set makes the PH 5.3 easy to join with balanced or single-ended amplification, and the matching full-size width lines it up with AVM Evolution preamplifiers, power amplifiers and integrated amplifiers in a rack. Owners of turntables that accept an external supply can run the deck from the phono stage rather than a plug-in adapter.

Alternatives

The AVM Evolution PH 3.3 offers the same inputs, loading and remote functions with a fully transistorised output stage at EUR 4,990.
