The AVM30 PH 30.3 is a stand-alone phono preamplifier from the AVM 30.3 line of AVM, a German maker that has developed and built phono preamplifiers since its founding in 1986. Separate phono inputs for MM and MC are provided, with adapter plugs included. It amplifies moving magnet and moving coil cartridges, uses Class-A RIAA equalization and includes a subsonic filter. It can be used with the integrated amplifier of the same line or with any line-level preamplifier.

Key specs that matter

Three RCA input pairs allow up to three turntables or tonearms to be connected, and a single RCA pair carries the output. Gain at 1 kHz is 40 dB in MM mode and 60 dB in MC mode. Loading for moving magnet pickups is fixed at 47 kOhm and 220 pF, while the MC input starts at 47 kOhm and 1 nF and can be adjusted. Output impedance is 47 ohm and the maximum output voltage is 6.5 V at 1 kHz. Frequency response is 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.3 dB and 8 Hz to 100 kHz within 3 dB, and RIAA accuracy stays within 0.3 dB. Distortion is below 0.013 percent for MM and below 0.055 percent for MC. The case measures 150 x 52 x 108 mm and weighs 0.5 kg without its supply.

Engineering and use context

Signal-to-noise is rated at 72 dB, or 82 dB(A), in MM mode with a 5 mV input, and at 66 dB, or 73.5 dB(A), in MC mode with 0.5 mV. Those input levels are also the sensitivities that produce 500 mV at the output. Crosstalk is at least 40 dB. Power arrives from an external 24 V DC supply that AVM calls silent, which keeps mains interference away from the equalization circuit. Consumption is 3.6 W in operation including the supply and 0.1 W in standby. The solid aluminium housing also acts as shielding, and the signal path is kept very short. AVM avoids DIP switches in this unit and instead supplies a phono load adapter for 100, 200 and 1,000 ohm with gold-plated connectors meant to resist ageing. The adapter plugs into dedicated sockets to set MC impedance for the cartridge in use. Silver and black finishes are offered, and MM or MC operation is chosen with a switch.

Pairing

Its output connects to a high-level input of an amplifier or preamplifier, with the AS 30.3 integrated from the same line as the matching partner. Cartridge makers state a recommended load, and the plug-in adapter lets an MC system be matched to one of the three available values.
