Key specs that matter

Balanced XLR sockets supply two of the four inputs and unbalanced RCA sockets the other two, each with its own gold-plated ground post, plus balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs. Gain covers 40 dB to 69 dB, measured at the XLR output at its upper limit. MM input impedance is fixed at 47 kohm with selectable capacitance, while MC impedance is selectable between 5 ohm and 47 kohm. Engineering and use context

Internally, Musical Fidelity uses a transistor-based three-stage discrete layout running in Class A and avoids integrated circuits in the signal path. The equalisation is fully passive and divided into two separate stages, a split-passive approach. Gain values are switched by relays, while capacitance and impedance are switched by JFET transistors. The supply is built around an encapsulated toroidal Super Silent Power Transformer, and the mains inlet is an industrial grade socket with EMI filtering plus a DC blocker to stop interference and transformer hum. Each gain stage is fully balanced, so the positive and negative signal halves are processed separately from input to output. Front and side panels are heavy gauge extruded aluminium, and the enclosure acts as a Faraday cage against outside electromagnetic fields. A slim solid aluminium remote control lets the owner change settings from the listening seat.

With balanced and unbalanced outputs on the back, the Vinyl S connects to either an XLR or an RCA line level socket of the partnering amplifier. Two record players can remain connected at once through the paired inputs, one of them with a balanced tonearm lead if required.
