The Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 is a Musical Fidelity MM and MC phono stage built around a discrete Class A nuvistor tube stage housed in massive casework. The company set out to make a phono stage without practical limits, so that neither the input stage can be overloaded nor the output driving capacity run short. Compared with the earlier Nu-Vista Vinyl, the internal audio circuitry is now discrete and fully balanced.

Key specs that matter

For MM cartridges gain at the XLR outputs is 40, 43, 46 or 49 dB, input impedance is 47 kohm and capacitance is selectable from 50 to 400 pF. THD at 1 kHz is below 0.005%, overload margin is 32 dB and signal to noise is above 110 dB A-weighted at 40 dB gain. For MC cartridges gain is 60, 63, 66 or 69 dB, impedance is selectable from 5 ohm to 47 kohm with a fixed 400 pF capacitance, THD is below 0.008% and signal to noise exceeds 98 dB at 60 dB gain. Inputs number two XLR plus two RCA, alongside one RCA output at 500 mV nominal and 10 V maximum, and one balanced XLR output at 1 V nominal and 20 V maximum. The chassis measures 483 x 188 x 510 mm and weighs 22 kg, or 30 kg in its shipping box.

Engineering and use context

Three gain stages run on fully Class A discrete transistor circuitry, the first giving 20 or 40 dB, the second 20 or 23 dB and the third 20 or 26 dB. Equalisation is passive and split into two separate stages, and besides RIAA it offers DECCA and COLUMBIA curves. A subsonic filter can be off, mild (IEC) or standard, the latter at 20 Hz with 18 dB per octave. The signal then passes to a separate board per channel carrying a balanced buffer built on eight 7586 nuvistors. Gain is switched by signal relays, whereas JFET transistors handle the capacitance and impedance changes, and each input stores its own settings. An encapsulated toroidal transformer feeds two symmetrical low-noise supplies, one per channel, and each discrete stage has a DC servo. The front and side panels, machined from extruded aluminium profiles, act as a Faraday cage. A colour display shows loading and the selected input and can be dimmed, and a machined remote runs on AAA batteries. Consumption is 40 W maximum and below 0.5 W in standby.

Pairing

Since the RCA and XLR outputs have their own individual stages, both can drive separate preamplifiers simultaneously. An optional Nu-Vista Uni PSU, sold separately, moves the mains supply into a matching second box.
