The MX-VYNL is a fully balanced phono stage from the compact MX series of Musical Fidelity, built to work with virtually any moving magnet or moving coil cartridge. Because it carries both traditional RCA sockets and a balanced XLR connection on the input side, two turntables can stay connected to it at the same time, and the inputs are fully isolated so the owner switches between them. The model is now listed by Musical Fidelity as discontinued, and its overload margin is described by the company as very wide, able to handle even demanding cartridges.
Key specs that matter
Output reaches 4 V RMS single ended from the RCA sockets and 8 V RMS balanced from the XLR sockets, which follow the EIA RS-297-A standard. RIAA and IEC accuracy is specified within plus or minus 0.1 dB, and the correction holds to beyond 80 kHz. In MM mode, channel separation is better than -86 dB, signal to noise exceeds 101 dB and THD stays below 0.007%, with 5 mV or 2.5 mV selectable sensitivity on the XLR input and a 70 mV maximum, giving 23 dB of headroom. In MC mode separation is better than -83 dB, signal to noise exceeds 98 dB and THD stays below 0.01%, with 0.8 mV or 0.4 mV selectable sensitivity and a 12 mV maximum, or 24 dB of headroom. The case is 220 mm wide, 53 mm high including feet and 215 mm deep, and it weighs 1.9 kg unpacked or 2.4 kg in its box.
Engineering and use context
The balanced input uses a Mini-XLR socket rather than a full-size connector. MC input impedance can be chosen from many settings, and MM capacitance from several values, and Musical Fidelity points out that both can be adjusted during playback, which allows experimenting with loading on the fly. The circuit is built with surface-mount (SMD) components and has a low impedance output. Power comes from an outboard 12 V, 500 mA DC adaptor with a 1.3 mm pin plug, and the adaptor accepts 100 to 240 V AC at 50 or 60 Hz, so it works on mains supplies worldwide. Consumption is under 8 W. The box contains the mains adaptor and a manual.
Pairing
A preamplifier or integrated amplifier with a balanced XLR line input can take the higher balanced output, while any conventional line level RCA input takes the single-ended feed. Two record players, one wired with RCA plugs and one with a balanced tonearm lead, can share the unit.
Alternatives
The Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista Vinyl 2 is a larger fully balanced phono preamplifier with a Class A nuvistor stage, two RCA and two XLR inputs and a 22 kg chassis.
