The RS150 is a network streamer from HiFi Rose of Korea combining a DAC section and an analogue preamp stage with its network player. A 14.9 inch IPS touchscreen fills most of the front panel, and the case is machined from solid high-purity aluminium. The software is Rose OS version 1.22.4, a customised build of Android 7.1.

Key specs that matter

HiFi Rose chose an ESS SABRE ES9038PRO chip with the Velvet Sound architecture, clocked by a high-precision femtosecond oscillator, and the RS150 accepts PCM up to 32 bit and 768 kHz as well as native DSD512. The balanced XLR pair delivers up to 9 Vrms, twice the 4.5 Vrms of the single-ended RCA pair. Measured at 1 kHz, noise sits 120 dB down balanced and 117 dB down single-ended, while THD+N is 0.0003 percent balanced and 0.0005 percent single-ended. The processor is a hexa-core design with two Cortex-A72 cores up to 1.8 GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores up to 1.4 GHz, supported by a Mali-T864 GPU and 4 GB of LPDDR3 memory. The unit measures 430 x 316 x 123 mm and weighs 13 kg.

Engineering and use context

A linear supply stage feeds the circuits, and HiFi Rose kept the number of chassis parts low to limit the effect of vibration. Digital inputs are coaxial S/PDIF, optical Toslink, AES/EBU, USB-B 2.0 and HDMI ARC, and a stereo RCA line input brings in an analogue source. Beyond the XLR and RCA analogue outputs, the RS150 sends digital audio over coaxial, optical and AES/EBU, and carries I2S over both a DVI socket and an RJ45 socket. An HDMI 2.0 output passes video up to 3840 x 2160 at 60 Hz. Music can be stored on an internal SSD of up to 4 TB, an external hard drive of up to 10 TB or a Micro SD card of up to 400 GB, and libraries on a NAS can be browsed over the network. Supported services and protocols include TIDAL, internet radio, podcasts, AirPlay, DLNA and Roon Ready operation, and the unit carries MQA Full Decoder certification. The unit draws 55 W from a 100 to 230 V supply at 50 or 60 Hz. A Bluetooth handset is supplied, and phones or tablets on iOS and Android run the Rose Connect control app.

Pairing

Used as a preamplifier, the RS150 can feed two-channel power amps or self-powered monitors over XLR or RCA. A separate DAC would be connected via one of the digital outputs, I2S included, and a television linked over HDMI ARC routes its audio into the same chain of equipment.
