The Evolution MP 3.3 is a media player from AVM, the German electronics maker based in Malsch that has specialised in preamplifiers since its founding in 1986. It combines AVM's in-house X-STREAM Engine network streamer, a slot-in CD drive and a DAC with an analogue volume-controlled output, so it can act as the digital source for a system or drive power amplifiers or active speakers directly. It is the all-transistor sister of the MP 5.3, which adds a tube output stage.
Key specs that matter
Conversion uses a double-quad ESS 9028PRO DAC, handling PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD256. Frequency response extends from 0Hz to 100kHz, total harmonic distortion is below 0.001% and channel crosstalk is better than 94dB. Output impedance is 94 ohms balanced and 47 ohms single-ended, and signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 100dB. Inputs include HDMI ARC, coaxial and optical S/PDIF, USB-A for external drives, Bluetooth 5.0 and network streaming. Outputs are balanced XLR and single-ended RCA, switchable between fixed and variable level, plus a fixed line out and coaxial and optical digital outputs with optional volume control. The chassis measures 430 x 122 x 330mm and weighs 8kg.
Engineering and use context
The X-STREAM Engine is AVM's own software-based streaming platform, supporting Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz, web radio, UPnP, AirPlay 2 and Roon Ready, and because it is software-defined, new services and features arrive through online updates. The CD mechanism is a slot-in Red Book drive. Volume is controlled in the analogue domain rather than by reducing digital bit depth, preserving resolution at low listening levels, which is what makes the variable outputs suitable for driving a power amplifier without a separate preamplifier. The digital inputs are signal-sensitive and switch the player on automatically when a source starts sending audio. AVM's RoomConneXion multiroom function links several AVM X-STREAM devices around the home. The screwless brushed aluminium housing also acts as shielding for the circuitry, and each unit is hand-built in Malsch and put through a multi-day burn-in before shipping. A dimmable graphic display with a proximity sensor lights up as the user approaches, and the RC X app for iOS and Android controls all functions, with an aluminium RC 3 remote supplied.
Pairing
With its variable XLR and RCA outputs, the MP 3.3 can feed a power amplifier or active speakers directly, or connect at fixed level to an integrated amplifier. HDMI ARC brings television sound into the system, and trigger inputs and outputs switch connected AVM amplifiers.
Alternatives
AVM's own Evolution MP 5.3 is the same media player with a tube output stage.
