YBA, the French electronics maker, built the Genesis CD4 as a top-loading disc player for its Genesis range, and the model now appears in the company's list of discontinued products. Its disc support covers CD together with CD-R and CD-RW, and its dark aluminium body carries a front plate of black acrylic. The case measures 430 x 388 x 115 mm and the player weighs 11 kg.
Key specs that matter
D/A conversion uses a Cirrus Logic CS4398 chip. The unbalanced RCA output delivers 2.2 V and the balanced XLR output 4.4 V, with an SNR of 110 dB quoted for either connection. Its stated frequency response is 20 Hz to 20 kHz at -0.5 dB. Total harmonic distortion plus noise across 20 Hz to 20 kHz is 0.0015% with 16-bit material and 0.0008% with 24-bit material. Besides the two analogue outputs, the rear panel carries a coaxial digital output and an optical digital input, so the player can also convert signals from another source.
Engineering and use context
A Sanyo HD850 mechanism reads the disc, and the player uses YBA's patented Blue Diode design. Discs go in from above through a sliding door, and YBA advises leaving that door partly open during playback so that air moved by the spinning disc causes less vibration. Power comes from a 160 VA linear supply with a UI-Core transformer, and in total three transformers are fitted. The first feeds the digital section, the control functions and the mechanism, while the other two each supply one channel of the analogue stage. When only the analogue outputs are in use, the digital output circuits can be switched off from the rear. Three rocker switches on the front handle standby, play, pause and stop, and track skipping, and the display sits behind the acrylic panel.
Pairing
The player fits systems with either single-ended or balanced line inputs, and the higher level from the XLR sockets suits preamplifiers and integrated amplifiers with balanced connections. The coaxial output can feed an outboard DAC when the owner prefers a different converter, and the optical input accepts a television, streamer or game console so that the internal DAC also serves those sources. Owners who already have a preferred DAC can also treat the CD4 as a transport, using only the coaxial output and leaving the internal converter unused.
Alternatives
YBA also makes the Passion CD430 MKII, a CD player built around dual Analog Devices AD1955 converters with USB, optical and Bluetooth inputs.
