The DD35 is a full-size dedicated CD transport from Primare, part of the modular 35 series that also includes the PRE35 preamplifier and the I25 and I35 integrated amplifiers. It uses the same disc drive as the CD35 and CD35 Prisma players but leaves out their digital-to-analogue converter and the Prisma control and network platform, so it only reads discs and passes the data on in digital form. The European list price is EUR 2,100, the US price is USD 2,699 and the UK price is GBP 1,649.
Key specs that matter
The unit reads discs with a TEAC CD 5020A-AT drive built only for CD, and the player holds one disc at a time. Signal leaves the unit through two digital outputs - one coaxial RCA socket and one optical Toslink socket - and there are no analogue outputs at all. For control the DD35 comes with the C25 infrared remote, and the rear panel adds IR in and out plus 12V trigger in and out, all on 3.5 mm jacks, and an RS232 port for outboard system control. The case measures 430 x 385 x 106 mm including buttons and connectors and weighs 10.8 kg, and it is offered in a black or a titanium finish.
Engineering and use context
Primare describes the drive as a low-resonance unit that supplies a jitter-free signal to the digital output stage, and that output stage has its own discrete power supply so that noise from the rest of the circuitry is kept away from the data sent to the converter. Removing the DAC from the chassis means the quality of conversion is set entirely by the component the transport feeds, which lets an owner change or upgrade the converter later without replacing the disc player. The trigger, IR and RS232 connections are there for installations where several components are switched on together or run from a central control system, including multi-room setups. The front panel follows the Scandinavian design approach Primare calls lagom, with a small number of controls shaped for clear tactile feedback.
Pairing
Any DAC, digital preamplifier or integrated amplifier with a coaxial or optical input can accept the DD35, and a digital amplifier can be driven from it directly. Inside the Primare range it was planned as a partner for the PRE35, I25 and I35, and the brand presents this modular line as a way to build a system step by step and upgrade parts of it over time.
Alternatives
Listeners who want the same drive with a built-in converter and analogue outputs can choose the Primare CD35 player instead.
