The CD15 Prisma from Swedish company Primare, based in Limhamn, combines a compact disc player with a network player for stored and streamed files in one box. It is built on a chassis three quarters of standard component width, and Primare's Prisma connectivity and control platform handles streaming, multi-room grouping and app control.
Key specs that matter
Discs are read by a Philips CDM-M10 slot-loading mechanism, and conversion is handled by an AKM AK4490EQ 32-bit stereo DAC chip. One pair of RCA analogue outputs delivers 2.2 Vrms at a 370 ohm output impedance and can be switched between fixed and variable level. Frequency response is 20 Hz to 20 kHz within +0.1 and -0.65 dB, and THD+N stays below 0.01 percent across the audio band. Coaxial and Toslink digital outputs are provided. The USB-A port and the network inputs accept PCM up to 24-bit and 192 kHz and DSD128 at 5.6 MHz. The case measures 350 x 329 x 73 mm and weighs 6.6 kg, and power draw is 10 W in use and 0.5 W in standby.
Engineering and use context
Primare chose the Philips drive because it was first developed for the transport industry, which gives it good isolation from outside and internal vibration. An internal I2S and SPDIF interface with buffer memory sits between drive and DAC. The AK4490EQ chip uses a switched capacitor filter called OSR Doubler to keep the noise floor flat up to 200 kHz, and a symmetrical left and right channel layout. A linear power supply feeds the audio circuits, while a switch mode standby supply is turned off during playback to keep its noise out of the signal. Circuit boards are two and four layer designs populated with surface mount parts to keep signal paths short. Streaming covers AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Chromecast built-in, Bluetooth and UPnP/DLNA, with Roon Ready support also listed, and files in WAV, AIFF, FLAC, ALAC, MP3, AAC, WMA, OGG and DSD play from USB storage or a network share. Two Ethernet ports let the player act as a network switch, and dual-band Wi-Fi to 802.11ac is built in.
Pairing
With the variable output selected, the player can drive a pair of powered speakers directly and act as the whole source and control section of a compact system. In fixed mode it feeds any integrated amplifier or preamplifier line input. System control runs through the Primare C25 remote, RS232, IR in and out and trigger in and out, and the Prisma app groups it with other Prisma units for multi-room use. Black and Titanium finishes are offered.
Alternatives
The Primare CD35 Prisma moves up to a full-width chassis with a TEAC tray drive, an ESS Sabre ES9028PRO DAC and balanced XLR outputs.
