The Titan 15 is a powered subwoofer from the American loudspeaker maker Magico, announced with a first ship date in the first quarter of 2022 and a suggested US price of USD 32,000. It is built on the platform of the earlier QSub, with a sealed aluminium enclosure, and was developed around a pair of new bass drivers intended for very high output at low distortion.

Key specs that matter

Two 15 inch Titan bass drivers are mounted in the cabinet. Two class D amplifiers of 3,200 W each feed them, giving 4,800 W on a 120 V supply and 6,500 W on 230 V. Frequency response is 10 Hz to 150 Hz, reaching into the infrasonic range, and maximum output is quoted as 136 dB at 20 Hz. Signal enters through XLR analogue inputs with an input impedance of 45 kOhm. The enclosure measures 65 cm high, 65 cm wide and 76 cm deep, and the whole unit comes to about 177 kg.

Engineering and use context

Each driver uses a stiff aluminium cone with a 10 cm high-temperature voice coil, hung on a custom 25 cm dual progressive spider that permits about 41 mm of linear excursion both ways. The motor is rated to take the full continuous output of its amplifier. The two drivers are arranged in a dual-opposed layout, so the reaction forces of the cones cancel and less motion is passed to the cabinet and floor. Inside the sealed aluminium box, internal bracing and damping materials were optimised with finite element analysis software to keep the structure rigid and stable. The two amplifiers draw from two independent mains cables, each with its own power switch. The cabinet ships on factory-fitted rollers that make unpacking and positioning of the heavy enclosure easier, and these are then replaced by a dedicated set of cone feet made for the Titan 15.

Pairing

The built-in electronic crossover and DSP control center allow the Titan 15 to be matched to the main left and right loudspeakers, with parameters adjusted through Magico software over a network interface, and three groups of settings can be stored. Also included are automatic signal detection, auto shutdown, a clipping sensor and thermal protection. The high input impedance places a light load on any preamplifier output. A preamplifier or processor with balanced outputs is the natural feed, since XLR is the connection named for the analogue signal.

The Magico S-Sub is a smaller powered model with two 12 inch bass drivers, a 2,000 W amplifier and a response reaching down to 15 Hz.
