Magico lists the S-Sub as the only subwoofer in its S Series of speakers, a model intended to produce low distortion bass alongside the S Series floorstanding and centre channel models. Magico builds it around a pair of front-firing 13 inch drivers that the company engineered specifically for this application, placed in a thick aluminium cabinet and driven by an internal amplifier with DSP control.

Key specs that matter

Magico quotes a frequency response of 15 Hz to 150 Hz and an output of 120 dB SPL at under 1 percent THD at 40 Hz. The built-in amplifier delivers 2250 W on 120 V mains and 2500 W on 230 V mains. Each of the two drivers is rated at 550 W RMS continuous. Input impedance is 45 kOhm. The cabinet is 810 mm high, 489 mm deep and 389 mm wide, and the weight is 113 kg.

Engineering and use context

Each drive unit uses an aluminium cone and a two-layer 75 mm voice coil capable of 15 mm of linear excursion in both directions. The motor system includes multiple copper shorting rings, which Magico uses to lower distortion and reduce variation in inductance as the cone moves. The enclosure went through Finite Element Analysis and physical prototyping, and it combines internal bracing with advanced damping materials so that the cabinet itself adds as little as possible to the output. The S Series it belongs to comprises the S7, S5, S3 and S2 floorstanders, the SCC centre channel and this subwoofer. The amplifier inside the cabinet is a Class-D design. Its DSP software is set up for precise calibration and for integration with the associated speaker system, and it provides several EQ presets, automatic on and off detection and thermal protection. These functions are reached through a network-based interface rather than a panel of knobs on the cabinet.

Pairing

The S-Sub is intended to work with the Magico S Series, and its DSP is designed to blend with the associated speakers. Because it carries its own amplification, it needs only a line-level feed from a preamplifier or processor rather than a separate power amplifier channel.
