The SuperSub XXL is an active bass unit designed by Sandy Gross for the American company GoldenEar Technology. It belongs to the SuperSub series, which sits above the ForceField models, and it is the bigger of the two SuperSubs next to the SuperSub X. The listed price was USD 1,999 per unit, with a piano-gloss black cabinet.

Key specs that matter

The enclosure carries two active 12 inch long-throw, high-output woofers and two passive quadratic planar back-wave-driven radiators with 843.84 cm2 of surface area. Amplification is Class D with a MOSFET output stage, rated by GoldenEar at 2,000 W peak and 1,000 W RMS. The anechoic response is 25 Hz to 160 Hz at -6 dB on axis. Measured with feet, the cabinet is about 50.2 cm wide, 40.4 cm deep and 44.7 cm high, and the product weight is 37.2 kg, or 42.2 kg in the box. Mains versions for 120 V and 240 V are listed with a consumption of 1,600 W.

Engineering and use context

The layout follows a patented dual-plane, dynamic inertial-balancing concept. The two woofers are horizontally opposed and the two radiators are vertically opposed, so the reaction forces within each pair act against each other and are balanced out. Spreading the radiating surfaces across two planes also spreads the coupling of the sub to the room. Control comes from a 56-bit DSP running at 192 kHz, with a programmable logic state machine that updates in 278 ns to manage frequency response, soft clipping, DC offset, output-stage saturation, multi-band limiting and phase-correct equalisation. The enclosure is built from high-density medite.

Pairing

Only unbalanced line-level inputs are fitted, so the SuperSub XXL takes its signal from the sub or pre output of a control unit rather than from speaker terminals. The direct-coupled LFE input bypasses the internal crossover, and the left and right inputs run through a low-pass filter variable from 40 Hz to 150 Hz. A rear switch chooses between summed mono with the filter active or LFE pass-through, and when two units are used each one can be set to reproduce a single channel, filtered or unfiltered. A blue light at the back shows power, and there is no mains on-off switch.

Alternatives

The GoldenEar SuperSub X is the smaller model of the same series, using two 8 inch woofers and two radiators in a 35.6 x 33.5 x 32.5 cm cabinet weighing 18.2 kg.
