The ForceField 3 is a compact powered subwoofer from the American company GoldenEar Technology, described by its maker as the smallest and most affordable model of the ForceField series, the range that sits below the SuperSub models in the catalogue. It was sold at USD 599 per unit in a matte black finish, and GoldenEar later replaced it with the ForceField 30, which keeps the same basic driver and radiator recipe in a reshaped cabinet.

Key specs that matter

One 8 inch long-throw, high-output bass driver works with a quadratic planar back-wave-driven radiator measuring roughly 245 by 289 mm, giving a passive surface area of 447.5 cm2. GoldenEar rates the digital amplifier at 1,000 W peak and 500 W RMS, figures taken into a 50 ohm load with a 55 Hz sine held for five seconds rather than under the FTC method for 8 ohm loads. The published anechoic response runs from 27 Hz to 150 Hz at -6 dB on axis. With its feet fitted the box measures 28.9 cm wide, 40 cm deep and 29.2 cm high and weighs 11.8 kg, or about 14 kg in its shipping carton.

Engineering and use context

Instead of a port or a fully sealed box, the design pairs the active cone with an unpowered radiator moved by the pressure behind the woofer cone, which lets a very small enclosure reach low frequencies without port noise. The cabinet walls are not parallel - viewed from the front, the top is narrower than the bottom - which limits internal standing waves and leaves the maximum area on the underside for the radiator. A DSP section inside the amplifier shapes the frequency response, keeps distortion down and protects the driver from damage when the unit is overdriven.

Pairing

Connection options cover both line-level and speaker-level systems. A mono low-level input is unfiltered and direct coupled, so it suits a receiver or processor LFE jack whose bass management already sets the crossover. For stereo amplifiers without a sub output, the speaker-level inputs feed a continuously variable 12 dB per octave low-pass filter adjustable between 40 Hz and 150 Hz, while the speaker-level outputs send the main speakers a feed rolled off by a 6 dB per octave high-pass filter at 150 Hz, relieving small bookshelf models of the lowest bass.

Alternatives

The GoldenEar ForceField 30 is the direct successor with the same driver and radiator recipe, a curved top panel and a 26 Hz to 170 Hz anechoic response.
