The SubSeries 350 is a sealed powered subwoofer with a 12-inch driver from PSB Speakers, the Canadian company that Paul Barton founded in 1972 and that now operates under Lenbrook International. Its public debut came in September 2018 at the San Diego edition of CEDIA, where it appeared with the smaller SubSeries 250, and the American list price at launch was USD 999. PSB no longer sells it.

Key specs that matter

The single 300 mm woofer uses a polypropylene cone on a rubber surround, driven by a 50 mm voice coil and a 1,400 g magnet. A discrete MOSFET Class D amplifier supplies 300 W of continuous output. PSB rates the on-axis response at 25 Hz to 150 Hz within 3 dB, and the output is 10 dB down at 20 Hz. The low-pass filter follows an LR4 slope and can be set anywhere from 50 Hz to 350 Hz. The cabinet measures 400 mm wide, 405 mm high and 410 mm deep, and without packaging it weighs 19.5 kg, rising to 22.8 kg in the shipping carton.

Engineering and use context

PSB chose a closed box with no port, shaped as a near cube with rounded edges and a high-gloss black finish, and it stands on customised rubber isolation feet. A limiting circuit that PSB calls smart bass watches the input and stops the woofer and amplifier from being driven past their limits whatever signal level arrives. The phase control is continuously variable rather than a two-position switch, so the output can be lined up with small satellite speakers placed at different distances. An auto on and off function wakes the unit when a signal appears, and in standby the draw stays below 0.5 W, which PSB presents as part of the efficient amplifier design.

Pairing

A line-level LFE socket takes the dedicated low-frequency channel coming from a surround processor or receiver. For a stereo amplifier without such an output, pairs of 5-way binding posts carry speaker-level signals in and out, and they accept bare wire, spade lugs, pins or banana plugs. The line-level outputs are high-passed at 80 Hz with a 12 dB per octave slope, so front speakers fed from them can be relieved of the deepest bass. The wide adjustment range of the low-pass filter allows use with compact bookshelf models as well as larger floorstanders.

Alternatives

The PSB SubSeries 250 is the smaller sealed sibling, built around a 10-inch driver and a 200 W continuous amplifier.
