The SubSeries 250 is a 10-inch sealed subwoofer that PSB Speakers of Canada unveiled on 5 September 2018 during that year's CEDIA show in San Diego, together with the 12-inch SubSeries 350. The launch price was USD 699. PSB developed the amplifier with its sister company NAD Electronics, and the voicing took place at Canada's National Research Council under Paul Barton. PSB has since withdrawn it from sale.
Key specs that matter
The front-firing driver is a 10-inch (254 mm) polypropylene cone with a rubber surround, a 38 mm voice coil and a magnet weighing 990 g. A Class D MOSFET amplifier provides 200 W continuous, with 300 W available as dynamic peak. On-axis response is 25 to 150 Hz within 3 dB, with the -10 dB point at 20 Hz. The low-pass filter is a fourth-order Linkwitz-Riley type variable between 50 and 350 Hz, and phase is continuously variable up to 180 degrees. The cube-like cabinet measures 345 x 375 x 365 mm, weighs 16 kg net (18 kg packed) and comes only in high-gloss black.
Engineering and use context
The acoustic suspension enclosure is built from MDF with softened edges, and the closed box trades some efficiency for a steeper natural low-frequency rolloff than a ported design. To keep the driver and the amplifier from being overdriven at high levels, smart bass limiting circuitry steps in, which matters in a compact cabinet paired with a large woofer. The MOSFET output stage runs in Class D for efficiency, and in standby the sub draws under 0.5 W, with an auto on/off function that wakes it when a signal arrives. Volume, crossover and phase are set with three rotary knobs on the rear panel, and there is no remote control. Vibration-absorbing feet decouple the enclosure from the floor.
Pairing
Connection options cover line-level and LFE inputs and outputs, plus gold-plated binding posts for speaker-level input and output, so the SubSeries 250 fits both AV receivers and stereo amplifiers that lack a sub output. With a receiver, the LFE input bypasses the internal filter and bass management stays in the processor. In a stereo system, the wide filter range allows it to support small satellites as well as larger bookshelf models, and the outputs can relay the feed onward to another sub or to the main amplifier.
Alternatives
The PSB SubSeries 350 moves up to a 12-inch driver with 300 W continuous power and launched at USD 999.
