The SB-4000 is the sealed-box member of the SVS 4000 Series, sharing its amplifier and much of its driver technology with the ported PB-4000 and drawing on the earlier 16-Ultra line. SVS designed the closed cabinet to make use of room gain and to stay far smaller than a ported sub of similar specification. The model is now retired, its last listing reading USD 1,399.99 against a regular USD 1,899.99, and SVS suggests the SB-3000 or the 17-Ultra R|Evolution Series as current choices.

Key specs that matter

A 13.5-inch woofer is powered by the Sledge STA-1200D, a Class D design rated for 1,200 W RMS continuous and more than 4,000 W of peak output. SVS quotes 19 to 310 Hz within 3 dB, measured quasi-anechoically on a 2 m ground plane. The enclosure is 46.5 cm high, 45.3 cm wide and 47.1 cm deep without its grille, 53 cm deep with it, and it weighs 46.4 kg. Two finishes were offered, a gloss black piano lacquer and Premium Black Ash.

Engineering and use context

For the sealed version SVS gave the 4000 Series driver an overhung motor, rated at 52 mm Xmax and 76.2 mm Xmech. The whole driver is 19.5 kg with a 17.1 kg motor built from twin toroidal ferrite magnets, a vented low-carbon steel U-yoke and top plate, and a copper shorting sleeve. An eight-layer aluminium flat-wire voice coil of 3 inches, a vented paper-composite cone with laminated glass fibre dust cap, a cast aluminium frame and a parabolic SBR surround complete the unit. The amplifier drives it through 32 A MOSFETs and includes active power factor correction that regulates the rail to 360 V DC across 100 to 240 V mains, plus ground loop isolation. A 50 MHz Analog Devices DSP with 56-bit filtering carries EQ and limiter settings tuned for this sealed cabinet. The front baffle is MDF of about 5 cm, internally braced and lined with insulation, and a curved steel mesh grille covers the driver.

Stereo inputs and outputs come in both XLR balanced and RCA form at 22 kilohm, which lets the sub accept a home theater LFE line as readily as a pro-level balanced source. An inlaid 8-character LED display on the front can be dimmed or switched off, an infrared remote is supplied, and the SVS Bluetooth app for Apple and Android phones stores three presets covering volume, crossover, phase and polarity, room gain compensation and a three-band parametric equaliser. Auto-on sensing and a 3-12 V trigger input handle power-up.
